(4,254 posts)I am deaf in one ear and have just 40% hearing in the other since I had meningitis when I was a baby. I never got a hearing aid until 30. (Cost too much when I was a child. ) I spent most of my time reading in the library and home. It is lonely being deaf but I traveled the world when I read Look, Time, Life and National Geographic. Our family never read anything but sports pages and sales ads. I was the weird one. My mother said I was weird because I would go in my room and read. I loved History, English, and Geography in school. I was profoundly affected by the movie ON THE BEACH and the trial of Adolph Eichemann in Israel. Then came the civil rights riots and protests. And then came Viet Nam and the assassinations of JFK, Bobby Kennedy and MLK. I remember the day of the Cuban crises and a neighbor running over to our house so upset. My mother was on her way out to go shopping. She was unaware of what was happening and did not care. Our poor neighbor was crying her eyes out.
I left America for Canada August 15th, 1969, my brother's birthday and Woodstock was happening. I never returned to live. I was accepted with my husbsnd as a refugee by Canada.
My brother and I were close still, but when Obama became president he changed. He watched FOX cable all the time and became a RW nut. I saw him uncoverd and a big racist like those he listened to. He hates minorities and refugees. He believes in guns for everyone. Probably has one.
Maybe if things get worse, Canada may be accepting Americans as refugees. For those interested see what kind of occupations are needed and learn french.
I love Canada. I finally fit in.
