(22,785 posts)John Kennedy won the 1960 election by the skin of his teeth by carrying Illinois' electoral votes narrowly. His electoral base then was the South which he had solidly carried.
Still, ignoring how pivotal that Southern electoral base would be to his re-election electoral strategy in 1964, President Kennedy boldly sent U.S Marshals and the National Guard to the University of Mississippi to force the American civil right of James Meredith to attend that public university. What a great moment for this nation that was. I still remember it like it was yesterday.
By any account, that was not a "smart" political move for President Kennedy to have done. I personally believe, it would have cost him the '64 election. But...President Kennedy did the right thing. And the rest is history. Kudos to John F. Kennedy.
Today, President Obama, at possibly the risk of losing the 2012 election (because let's face it, my civil rights as a gay American man are not resoundingly popular in this nation) did the right thing. He acted as President of all Americans. Kudos to Barack Obama.
I am very proud of him. His detractors can go to hell.
