... I guess they needed a way to differentiate themselves, but the term definitely applies even if they were intelligent in other ways. The whole sub-culture had factions that were identified by the clothing, color of suspenders and shoe laces (Braces and Laces) and flight jackets or Fred Perrys, not unlike other gangs like the Crips and the Bloods.

Good times, good memories.
