The problem is it potentially creates scenarios like this one. You cannot deny the premise of it: Yes 79,000 did trump 2.5 million. It doesn't matter if those 2.5 million votes were all in California, or hiding behind God's back, or in Alaska. Those 2.5 million votes represent actual people who are facing the fact that 79,000 people decided the election for them, decided whether they get healthcare coverage, decided policy ranging from education to housing, climate change etc etc.
That the Electoral College creates these scenarios ( regardless of the pitfalls of any candidate) means we have a problem. It is possible that a candidate could win the election with just 30% of the popular vote depending on population density and an imbalance in how electoral votes are dispersed- that is bound to create tension and problems.
