23. Teaching in a rough urban school was by far the most difficult job I've ever had.

When my wife was accepted to graduate school in another state I was ready to follow her. I haven't taught since.

Besides the lack of resources and losing sleep worrying about students you know are living in horrible situations and even homeless, I was afraid of becoming one of the shell-shocked leave-me-alone-and-I'll-leave-you-alone sorts of teachers. Our school had fantastic teachers, struggling teachers, and a few cynical burn-outs who had lost any idealism they'd had when they decided to teach.

I wasn't good at "reading" my classes and heading off trouble before it started so I had to be the authoritarian sort of teacher and I hated that, it's not my nature at all.

I love this guy and I sincerely hope he's the sort who can keep up that energy until he's an expert teacher in that magical way of the best teachers I had in school and some of the teachers I taught with.

This is great. liberalmuse Aug 2016 #1
