(4,490 posts)I had a relative (now deceased) who's job had something to do with disaster preparedness. Sorry if my memory is fuzzy as I don't recall his job title and don't know who he directly reported to. Basically he'd told them they weren't prepared for a category 5 hurricane, and they had refused to put in place proper safeguards and wouldn't plan for evacuating people in the poor neighborhoods. Then they eliminated his job. He had talked about it the previous Christmas with us at the family get together after they'd moved from Louisiana. What struck me most was him saying "If New Orleans is hit by a category 5 hurricane, the city will end up underwater." A friend of his ended up in the Superdome and had some horror stories, though I don't recall him saying much around me. I know it really hurt him watching that unfold. My aunt and him really loved that city.
