Vermont has a Progressive tradition going back to before it was a state- outlawed slavery in the Vermont Republic Constitution.
I'm not saying these guys were democrats or liberal on all issues, but they weren't considered conservatives in their day, and by today's repub standards, they'd be considered flaming liberals.
