In reply to the discussion: Appreciation thread for President Barack Obama~ [View all]drray23

President Obama is one of the best presidents of the modern era. He accomplished a number of major things what many could not achieve before including Bill Clinton.
The ACA is a prime example. It is changing the face of healthcare in this country as we know it. Yes, it is based on private insurances, but now they have to adhere to a set of rules. That fact alone is a giant step forward. Despite all the criticism from his detractors, it delivered just as the president said it would. The cost of healthcare has been going down ("bending the curve" , the number of people insured as been increasing. It is becoming firmly ingrained in the fabric of our society and I doubt it will go away. Even right leaning people are now coming around to it once they reap the benefits.
The reforms of the finance industry is another notable high point. No longer can credit card companies jack up your rate because you were late on another card. It is just but one small example of the consequences of that reform.
Of course, LGBT rights are moving forward at a very fast pace now. When the president took office, 31% of americans approved of Gay marriage, now this number is 61 %. Yes he did not do that all by himself but he acted as a catalyst and enabled it starting with getting rid of dont ask dont tell.
Foreign policies achievements are significant and historic. We are negotiating with Iran rather than bomb them, we are opening up with Cuba, something we should have done decades ago.
We finally are out (mostly) of irak and afghanistan. No more large ground troop expeditions whose sole purpose was to feed the militaro industrial complex. Instead, a reasoned, pinpointed strategy of striking when and if needed for humanitarian reasons.
Is everything perfect? Of course not. We saw that with drone attacks that have unfortunate side effects. Is it better than 100k soldiers on the ground, for sure it is.
When you consider the scope of all that this president has done, with the headwind he had from the GOP congress, it is truly amazing.
Yes, for sure, you can find areas with which you do not agree with the president. For me, I am a pragmatic. I do not get hung up on an issue I disagree with the president, I consider the whole thing which is that on balance he has been a boon for us democrats, and the country in general. People will realize this in decades to come, history books will mark it.

They won't be happy until we get a Libertarian POTUS. Then they'll extoll HIS greatness.

Being skeptical of another so-called "Free Trade" Agreement isn't irrational.
