(65,391 posts)young adult cat last July who had been neutered and ear-notched by a catch and release program. Tico had been hanging around my apartment for a while, looking for attention but too shy to be touched until I gained his trust. I finally got close enough to grab him, and when I first saw that he was neutered, I assumed he was a pet, since I didn't know at the time about the ear-notching that signaled a neutered feral. I just thought he'd been in a fight.
But the fact that this cat was neutered and obviously well cared for was a sign that he might well be someone's pet. Besides, the way that arrow was positioned indicates that she almost certainly shot at him as he sat right in front of her looking up at her, probably expecting to be petted. That, too, suggests a pet, not a feral cat, since ferals tend to be shy. My Tico desperately wanted to be given attention, so he hung around my apartment and shadowed me on my walks, and even sat outside my window and visited with my other 3 cats, but it took some time for him to trust me enough to get close enough for me to grab him and take him inside.
I bet she knew this was someone's pet. This woman was on the hunt, looking for a living creature to kill, and a friendly, affectionate pet cat was an easy target.
