Though frankly, people shouldn't let their cats out unmanaged.
I inherited an "outdoor" cat - a poor old thing, like ten years old, rangy as hell. she would not use the litterbox, and was too old to train (or if she was trainable at that age, i didn't know how.) My solution? Toilet tissue and vinegar. Better I endurethe fragrance of cat poop for a few moments than let Cow Nose become raccoon chow. or, as happened the time she DID slip out, get torn up by hte neighbor's "outdoor cat."
