(31,780 posts)31. Conformity to white ideals of beauty
http://problemsinourworld.wordpress.com/2014/10/30/african-american-women-and-hair-identity-reality-observed-through-the-looking-glass-of-conformity/
The conversation of hair will never be settled as long as the media continues to idealize a white perspective on beauty. Role model, Beyonce, is the face of beauty for African American girls; however, she is also the face of conformity. Her beauty revolves around several weaves and bleaching her skin to look more alluring. Even black reality shows such as Basketball Wives revolve around beautiful black women who carry white womens beauty ideals. The lack of encouragement for black beauty in the media passively encourages hatred for natural hair. Beauty magazines and pageants also add to the disgrace of black beauty. In 2007, the Glamour Magazine editor claimed that natural hair, afros, dreads, and other political hairstyles are an absolute dont(Thompson). There has never been a time where black hair was seen as equally attractive. We have yet to see Miss America or Black Miss Universe with an Afro or cornrows or dreadlocks(Thompson). Natural black hair has yet to be pedestaled as beautiful, but instead is constantly attacked. There is little hope for children and future generations to see themselves as beautiful, naturally, with no role models to affirm this.

If you had read the article, you would have known better than to post your OP.

Because then the OP might understand the difference between appropriation & assimilation.

Think so. I'm pretty good at figuring it out. I'm thinking White Female over 40.

I'm American. We have no culture. Just a bunch of silly commercials running around in our heads. . . .

You should try to understand a concept, before trying to engage in "whataboutism" with it.

I've said before that one of the problems with the jury system ignores patterns of behavior

I agree. A jury can't see a pattern of abuse, if individual posts are not over the line.

Personally I don't think choosing a particular hairstyle ever constitutes "cultural appropriation".
