(11,841 posts)I dont really care for it because it taxes things like houses, but the fair tax has a provision that sends checks out monthly that refunds the taxes paid by someone up to a certain income level. The result being that the poor wouldnt pay any tax.
What I DO like about it is that we finally get to tax all those who now can avoid paying their full amount. Think about it; electricians, plumbers, painters, mechanics, accountants, tax preparers, landscapers, handymen, AC repair, construction, flooring people, surveyors, etc., dont get 1099s or W2s for their income. They may get SOME, but mostly none. So they pay taxes based on what they report. Which will be nowhere near what they really make. Most of these jobs get paid in cash too. I'm not even mentioning the criminal element, who never pay ANYTHING. You pay a sales tax, and everyone contributes.
I dont see how it puts more money into the hands of the 1%, they'd be paying a hefty tax on all the high priced toys they love to buy.
I think a variation of the fair tax should be looked at very seriously. Its the best way to fund the government. We can tax the rich all we want, but there arent enough of them to fund everything thats needed
