(3,249 posts)most people I flew with wore a suit and tie. That loosened up very quickly after the airline deregulation and the masses started flying. I flew back and forth to Europe a few times in the early 70's and still most people wore jackets and ties.
I spent a lot of time in Asia, but most of my flying there was in uniform on military or MAC charter flights and we always wore Class A or the old TW uniforms. No one traveled in BDU back then.
Since the 90's I was back and forth to Europe again and the standards had dropped considerably. But I was senior enough and a frequent flyer so I was almost always upgraded to at least Business Class. There were some suits and ties, but not as many. Many folks just wearing casual, even jeans, but at least not raggedly shorts or jeans with holes. Even I didn't wear a tie anymore, but usually wore a sports jacket (more pockets) and a collared shirt. And most of the people in business class don't stink nor do they carry on a garlic pizza to eat on the flight.
Yeah, I'm old and crotchety.
