20. I think he really does oppose torture because he has experienced it.

Decades of practice in abandoning whatever other principles he may have had, however, have probably made his definition of torture a little flexible. I haven't seen him crusade for transparency that would help us ferret out torturers, for instance. Out of sigh, out of mind.
