(8,907 posts)58. No it's not. Here is the actual constitutional language . . .
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.
There is currently no requirement for being JUST a US Citizen. You have to be a natural born Citizen.
If, as you write all that is required is to be a US Citizen, why does the constitution even bother to have the phrase a natural born Citizen?
Again there has been no legal definition of a natural born Citizen.
Is it a person born anywhere in the world of US Citizens? If that`s the case then Obama born in Kenya wouldn`t matter because his mother was a US Citizen.
Is it a person born of US Citizens on foreign military facilities? McCain situation
Is it a person born on US soil from non-US Citizens (i.e. immigrants)? Early fore-fathers situations
Is it a person born on US soil from US Citizens?
Again no court has ever defined what is a natural born Citizen. There has never been a constitutional challenge to the phrase a natural born Citizen.
I believe that if Ted Cruz is nominated as a presidential candidate, this will probably go to court for a clearer definition.

Cruz was born in 1970. My understanding is that the law wasn't changed until 1986.

I think his term goes up to 2016. He'll leach off the blood of Texas until then.

Cruz WAS instrumental, albeit just one of the many Republicans to try to "Shut 'er down!"
