(50,566 posts)13. I grew up in California. My parents were moderate Republicans.
Then Reagan came along when I was a young teen. I despised him with every fiber of my being. It took me about three seconds to figure out that the Republican Party had changed its tone in favor of smashing women back into second-class citizenship. And they hated environmental protection? Were they fucking crazy? Turns out ... yes. (James Watt was Exhibit #1.) I've despised the GOP ever since then. My parents (particularly my father) hung in there with the Republicans for a few more cycles. By the time Bill Clinton came along, they were thoroughly disgusted too, and have never looked back.
