The New Senior Diet: Much cheaper than cat food. [View all]

Dried beans.
Red beans, navy beans, black beans, butter beans.
Buy in bulk for lower prices, if you can afford it.
Rice.
Buy in bulk, if you can afford it.

I'm talking 10 pound bags, if you can handle that 'one time expense' for food that will last you for weeks or months.

Water.
Of course you'll need water to cook your rice and beans.
Hopefully you have access to clean water and can pay the water bill.

Oh yeah, you'll need some source of heat to cook your meals.
Hopefully you can pay your gas or electric bill.
If you have a wood cook stove and access to free wood, all the better.
Hey, you could even try a solar oven.
Don't plan to eat on rainy days.

Rice-and-beans isn't the best diet, but it will keep body and soul together for quite a while, and although it may lack in nutrition, it's very filling.
And you won't ever be constipated again, but do expect an increase in flatulence.

You may supplement your diet if you have dandelions growing nearby.
Free for the taking and some folks may actually pay you to get rid of them.

Dessert?
Blackberries grow by many roadsides, at least here in the south.
Free for the picking.
Watch out for the thorns and take a stout stick in case you run into rattlesnakes.

Good luck to all of us old, retired, no-longer-able-to-work citizens.
