Never trust the first stories that come out of a mass-tragedy. News and police are lucky if they can count the bodies right on the first day. There is so much hysteria and panic, and then it rolls over into grief, and nobody asks questions.
And NYDN is not the source you trust to get this right. They rush out a story they know people will read.

There is still much confusion about this subject in the news media. Accounts differ in the details of how many children Vicki Soto supposedly saved, whether she hid them in a restroom or a closet, and whether she truly diverted the approaching shooter away from the classroom by claiming the kids were all in the gym . .
.
Then again, there's nothing that debunks this. It isn't an outright hoax. It's just still a confused rumor.
