(47,711 posts)The vocal fry is almost always a huge turnoff for me. I've watched video clips of Wallace from years ago and she didn't talk like that. I think it is something people pick up when hanging around certain kinds of people, usually pretentious ones I suppose. When I hear it, I get this constant urge to cough and clear my throat.
I had the same problem with Alex Wagner. I used to watch her on MSNBC during the day and had always liked her. When she came back to fill Rachel's spot, she was very different and the vocal fry was so annoying. It seems that she has since worked on it and it isn't so bad now.
It isn't just women. William F. Buckley was one of the worst. Years ago my husband was watching late night talk shows and he came into the bedroom and started talking like that because he'd been listening to Buckley. I busted out laughing and so did he once he realized what he was doing.
