59. Um... No. Not even close to reality

The squares far exceeded the hippies in sheer numbers. My mother, only a year older than John Lennon, was one of these people. So were my first husband's parents (born 1943--younger than George Harrison), my older cousins (born 1948-1955), and the 1950 babies like my first stepfather and second husband's parents. So were their siblings, cousins, friends, classmates and neighbors. Did I mention both sets of in-laws of the era spent their childhood and young adulthood in the Bay Area, a stone's throw from Berkeley?

The problem was that, though they were more numerous, they didn't protest, didn't do drugs, didn't consider their parents entirely hopeless, got their educations, got jobs, married, bought homes, had kids, sent their kids to scouts and little league, went to PTA meetings, had barbecues with their neighbors, bought American, and took road trip vacations. Some of them even joined the military because they wanted to, and they supported the war until Cronkite didn't. Even then, they didn't protest. They wrote to their Congresspeople and got involved with party politics--you know, traditional avenues for affecting change.

In short, they lived their lives very much like those of their parents, but their traditional behavior made them "boring." How much more fun it was for the media and its viewers/readers to titter and snicker over the "dirty hippies" and their provocative actions, long hair, scanty clothes, free love, and dope!

The squares were hiding right there in plain sight, tens of millions of them, and hippies and the media couldn't even see them, because they were blinded by their own self-importance...and from living in a social bubble of their own creation.

Sort of like how it's the deplorables who think their numbers are greater than they really are because they're getting the attention now, while the far more numerous normies who aren't deplorable and don't like traitor party actions are everywhere...but ignored.

thanks so much GenXer47 Apr 2023 #1
