Question about slim House majorities [View all]

I was thinking about this earlier.

Suppose that Republicans end up with a 218 - 217 majority. There are always slight changes in the number of House members: members resign to take other jobs, for health reasons, or there have been deaths. What happens if 2 Republicans leave for some reason? House vacancies are filled by special elections, but it takes awhile to set those up. In the meantime, are Democrats now in the majority? Would they elect a speaker and control the agenda?

It's possible either party may offer a committee chair to a member of the other party to swap sides. LonePirate Nov 2022 #3
