Not really. Marriages were certainly made to cement wealth, but there weren't that many wealthy people out there between colonial times and the Civil War. In addition, white women did indeed have property rights, established during colonial times and expanded in the 1800s -- most notably so white women could own, inherit and pass down slaves.

I’m not comparing their plight to enslaved black people but your denigration of women's historical lack of autonomy is noted (and we’re not even getting into persecuted second class religious groups like Jews who faced their own lack of freedom in this country’s history).

I would posit the word you’re looking for is white patriarchy. The Christofascists are trying to get back to a time when anyone who is not a white MAN is subordinate and without true autonomy.

Calling it white patriarchy erases the strong second-in-command role white women play when it comes to upholding that patriarchy. They aren't brainwashed -- they have decided that white supremacy is better than liberation.
