(1,571 posts)First -- check out a map of Virginia. Note the Potomac River that separates VA from MD. Note where the Potomac joins the Chesapeake Bay.
Now, go south, overland, from the Potomac river to the Rappahannock River. The peninsula that is bounded on the north by the Potomac, south by the Rappahannock, east by the Bay, and west by the mainland is the Northern Neck -- it's as red and rural as you can get.
