(82,849 posts)In the first annual Trump impeachment trial, Majority Leader McConnell did the bare minimum to claim he'd conducted a trial. The articles of impeachment were read into the record, each side made its opening statement, and they went directly to a vote to acquit. There was no evidence presented, no testimony from witnesses, and a lot of the material evidence against Trump was classified and never saw the light of day.
This time around there should be a fuller development of the record, evidence submitted, and testimony heard. Senate Republicans are refusing to engage any of it, preferring to hide behind a bogus argument that trying an impeached president is unconstitutional, which is a "tell" for how much they'd like all this to just go away.
I don't know how long the House Impeachment Managers are going to take to present their case in chief, but there are going to be a lot of really uncomfortable facts elicited that will cause a number of Senators problems if all they want to do is ignore the case against Trump.
