But I’ve seen what you’ve described among my scientist vs engineer friends.

I chalk it up to the fundamental difference between science and engineering: with science, the goal is expansion of knowledge. Thinking outside of the box and the limits of our understanding.

With engineering, the focus is “given these constraints, how do you build a system?” I feel like the engineering mindset is conducive to a more rigid type of thinking, one that favors (perceived) stability at the expense of freedom. I blame the lack of liberal arts in an engineering curriculum.
