(219 posts)is a very smart man in most respects. He's a small-r Republican; fiscally conservative, socially liberal. He's got that thing that a lot of us have; until he experiences it himself, he doesn't have a lot of empathy. But once he gets it, he gets it. My sister in law teaches elementary school math in Massachusetts (she's a career switcher, and is relatively new to the profession), my wife is a high school principal, and I'm a 26 year classroom veteran teaching high school English and most recently Theatre in Virginia.
A few weeks ago, we were talking about getting kids back to school. His thought was that we just need to pull the trigger and get the kids back. Some of them might get sick, but we really can't get the economy back until people get back to work. My response was "That's great. Until the kids go to visit grandma and kill her." He stopped and thought about it. "Yeah. You're right."
