An accuser gets a hearing. Once heard, people decide, using intelligence guided by experience in examining character and evidence.

When dealing with the general run of sexual harassment claims, lewd looks or words, a quid pro quo involving sexual favors, insistence on meetings outside the office or business hours, which are not criminal behaviors, however unwelcome or even distressing they may be, it is all very well to presume the claim has weight. In a civil matter, only a very slight edge in favor of the charge is required, after all. But a criminal charge requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt, and that standard, as a matter of cultural expectation, applies out of court as well as in. Reade made a charge of criminal assault, and has done so without any evidence beyond her word, and examination of her character, as revealed by her history, leaves no reason whatever to believe her unsupported word in any matter, let alone in a criminal charge.
