... intelligence services or some other law enforcement agency was picking up intel on the scheme, and alerted the new president’s people.

But they would have had to contact someone in the US government with their concerns to get the extraction done. THAT person needs to speak up - unless, I guess, it might compromise their position.

But the more I think about it as I type this, maybe they have already. Could that be the actual whistleblower that got this ball rolling in the first place?
