It's Like This, Charlie Dent [View all]

RE your remarks on CNN's on "Newsroom" that House Republicans are standing with the President at the moment because of base pressure, but "they resent being put in this position all the time."

Well, here’s the thing, Charlie. The position your fellow Republicans find themselves in is of their own making – and anyone with a functioning brain has known that all along.

The sad truth is that the powers-that-be in your party could have put a stop to all of Trump’s idiocy, his cruelty, his inane policies from day one, simply by telling him – in no uncertain terms – that they would not support him if he continued to pursue policies that damaged the Grand Old Party.

We’ve all seen how spineless your “pResident” is, how he’s grovelled before Putin, Kim Jung-Un, Mohamed Bin Salman. He would have caved the second influential GOPers confronted him, and threatened to speak out against him if he refused to toe the line that your party once considered sacrosanct.

Instead, your party not only supported Trump’s every idiotic move, they enabled him. Instead of putting a muzzle on an obviously rabid dog, they unleashed him – and as a result, he has bitten your party in the ass without restraint or consequences.

The Republicans could have spoken up at any time – when Trump insulted our allies, when he absolved Putin of attacking our election, when he locked toddlers in cages, when he denigrated our national heroes, when he refused to follow the rule of law, when he abandoned the Kurds to the delight of Putin – but they didn’t.

They could have threatened to withdraw their support when their “pResident” put inept cronies in cabinet positions, when his ‘best people’ were indicted and imprisoned, when he told easily-debunked lies, when he promoted ludicrous conspiracy theories as fact, when he jeopardized our national security by handing over classified information to the Russians, when he installed people in the White House who were refused security clearances due to ‘red flags’, when he personally pocketed taxpayer money, when he humiliated our country by acting the ignorant buffoon on the world’s stage.

Instead, your party chose to feed the foaming-at-the-mouth animal who has devoted himself to undermining our democracy by destroying the citizenry’s faith in the institutions that underpin that democracy – the FBI, the CIA, the judicial system, a free press – while doing the bidding of our enemies.

So forgive me for pointing out the bleedin’ obvious, Charlie. It’s people like you, who remained silent until it was too late, who are responsible for where you are now. It’s always easy to be the outspoken hero willing to drop a dime on the arsonist after the nation has been burned to the ground. It’s always easy to dial 911 after the hate crime has been carried out, and the victim has been pronounced dead. It’s always easy to be the after-the-fact witness who claims he didn’t see the theft-in-progress until the bank robbers have been caught red-handed with bags full of cash.

What gives me hope as an American citizen is the fact that Republicans are now being exposed as the spineless sycophants they’ve always been, despite decades of pretending they ever had a backbone to begin with.

What encourages me is the fact that your party has finally been exposed as the ass-kissers they are, willing to protect and defend an arrogant, self-serving, bloviating idiot before they will protect and defend the Constitution they swore an oath to, and before they will stand up for the constituents who relied on them to do exactly that.

To put in bluntly, Charlie, your party has proven beyond all doubt that it’s willing to destroy the country rather than stand up to the “pResident” who is systematically dismantling our nation – and your party along with it.

Not only does that demonstrate your party’s own lack of patriotism. It demonstrates your party’s willingness to stand by in silence as our democracy is destroyed by a simpering dumb-ass whose only claim to fame is being Putin’s bitch.

So don’t cry for the beloved country, Charlie Dent. Cry for the country that was once a beacon of hope the world over, and is now becoming just another ’shithole country’ that your party has turned us into.

There is nothing more pathetic than people like you – people who sound the alarm after the children are gunned-down in their classrooms, after the shoppers’ dead bodies are scattered all over the mall, after the Kurds are slaughtered, after the voters are prevented from voting, after migrant children are traumatized and locked in cages, after our traditional allies were alienated, after a woman’s rights were denied, after the idiotic, self-serving “pResident” your party – with Putin’s help – installed in the Oval Office.

You, Charlie Dent, are the poster boy for ‘too little, too late’. You are the epitome of the hypocrisy your party represents. You are the boy who finally cried wolf after the sheep already lay bloodied and slaughtered among amber waves of grain.

Your shame is obvious, along with every other Republican who claims to suddenly have acquired a conscience – but only when personally and politically convenient to do so.

It’s not comfortable to be on the losing side, Charlie. That was a lesson learned by Nazi collaborators when they were marched through the streets, spat upon by decent people who faced death rather than succumb to an enemy out to destroy their country.

I honestly don’t know what‘s worse – those who continue to support the traitor-in-chief, or those who pretend to be outraged after his blatant treason has become too obvious to be ignored.
