In reply to the discussion: John Pavlovitz: This Isn't Christianity [View all]struggle4progress
(118,212 posts)7. The gospel teaches us to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable
but these folk just further afflict the afflicted while comforting the already comfortable
A rich man dressed in fine purple linen and led a life of luxury. And a poor man called Lazarus was laid beside his gate, covered with sores. Lazarus longed to be fed with the scraps from the rich mans table: the dogs came to lick his sores.
The poor man died, and angels carried him to Abrahams bosom.
The rich man also died and was buried; and from far away among the dead, he saw Lazarus in the arms of Abraham. Father Abraham! he cried out, please pity me. I am in agony in these flames. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue.
Abraham replied, Remember you used to have ood things while Lazarus suffered. Now he is comforted and you are in agony. There is a chasm between you and us, so that those who want to go to you from this side cannot do so, nor can people come to us from your side.
The rich man said, Then I beg you to send him to my fathers house where I have five brothers so he can warn them to prevent their coming to this place of torture.
Abraham said, They already have Moses and the Prophets: let them listen to them.
Ah, Abraham, said the rich man, they would change completely if only someone came to them from the dead.
No, Abraham told him, if they will not listen to Moses and the Prophets, not even someone risen from the dead could convince them.

Not all Christians are bad, just some of them, but they were usually the ones who called the shots.

It's fair to say Christianity wouldn't exist today were it not such an effective means of control

EXACTLY. "Christianity" is exactly what any particular Christian decides it is.

I'm sure that's what he's fantasizing about. I'm just upset that we're paying for her.
