(343 posts)Here in Illinois we don't have open carry. Some states are gun crazy, look at Florida. Don't tell me about Chicago. Illinois has some decent gun laws. Trafficking guns into the state is a major problem. That being said, I think open carry is nuts. Look at the recent shootings in Texas. Where was the "good guy with a gun" there? Why didn't some pistol packing person draw down and open fire? Sadly, politicians and moronic voters have a "Clint Eastwood" fantasy about gun crime. The truth is that people rarely defend themselves or stop crime with guns. More often they shoot their neighbor over his b-b-q, they shoot their teenage kid sneaking back into the house, or they get tired of life and shoot themselves. When there is real gun crime, bystanders are not trained to handle it. If anything, they will make the situation worse by having a gun and then the responding officers will have to eliminate the "good guy with a gun" from the "bad guy with a gun." And don't buy the fantasy that just because a woman or a man puts on a uniform they are trained properly or will respond correctly to a crisis situation. Some people in law enforcement should not have a gun either. Look how many times police shoot people in situations that did not require it. Our whole country is gun nuts, and the world knows it. Until we get some sensible gun control incidents will continue to happen all over, everyday.
