(146,350 posts)In every case, I have simply gone in another direction to pass them by. I have also seen bears in the yard at my parents' citrus and avocado farm in California. I have not taken out the trash while they were there. I would not confront a bear with any firearm I would likely carry if I were, as you say, "strapped."
As for Craigslist and Facebook marketplace, I arrange to meet people, either as a buyer or seller, in a public place where other people will be around. Around here, most police departments let people meet in their parking lots. I buy and sell that way a lot, and would not do it otherwise when the item involves more than $100. I recently bought a 1996 Ford Ranger from a private party. After hearing the description of the truck, I arranged to meet the seller at the nearest DMV office to his location. I took a test drive. I bought the truck. The money exchange of 11 $100 bills took place at the clerk's window after the title transfer was completed.
I own firearms. I don't carry them outside of my home when going about my normal activities. I have never felt the need to do so. I think about where I'm going and observe where I am. I am not afraid of violence, because I can normally avoid it.
