(23,191 posts)We have killed many snakes over the years, or chased them away, but never once needed a gun. People who need guns for snakes, well, that says a lot more about them than the snakes, IMO. Wear boots, carry a hoe, and don't put your hands in places where there could be snakes and leave them the hell alone. Walk away if they are rattling. It worked when we were at Girl Scout Camp as kids and in piney forests where there are lots of rattlers. Commonsense, like avoiding old wood, especially near small streams and creeks, works for avoiding cottonmouths. Well that and being careful when getting wood from an old wood pile work. My mom and dad's old wood pile was a fave for cottonmouths, so they always took the hoe out with them and moved the logs first with that. Lots of snakes came out over the years, but they were never bit once. They kept the hoe well sharpened and killed some that acted aggressive, but most just ran away fast.
I think this is just being used as an excuse.
