The reality is that there are people who for whatever reason, are not competitive or driven by challenge. There will always be those people who are not driven to produce. I predict that the vast majority of people would continue to challenge themselves to have some kind of impact in the world, through creative means, or by inventing or building something regardless of whether it made them wealthy. The idea that people only do things because of money has been debunked over and over. Yes, there are people who are motivated by money and power, and greed. However, most people are driven by having their life mean something. We work for money because money buys food, pays for our housing, buys us things we need and some we want.
My wife and I think about what we would do if we won the Lottery, a few million dollars or even the big one. None of that fantasizing EVER includes doing nothing, being lazy on the couch. Mostly it is around starting organizations to help children in the community or continuing in school to finish our degrees and licenses to practice therapy or start an agency. We want to work for more than just having enough to eat or to pay off our student debt and mortgage, but those things are priority right now and keep us in the jobs we are struggling at.
