Because, for the most part, people don't really give a shit about stuff that happened 'a long time ago' or stuff that doesn't affect their daily life, so they forget it.
I'd bet that most adults can't name the original 13 colonies or tell you what an Isosceles Triangle is......despite almost everyone having learned those things in school.

Even if they don't teach it in school, where is the intellectual curiosity to learn it on one's own.
