If your child receives any consequence other than unexcused absences for the classes missed, get an attorney. Make the school officials go to their school board and add new rules against leaving school for this purpose.

You can vote out the school board if they do.

Short of that, they can't be permitted to treat your child's absence any differently than if they had car trouble and missed class. The absence is just "unexcused".
