Las Vegas casinos reopen after 78 days of being dark

Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal

Nevada casinos reopened for gaming at 12:01 am. Thursday, ushering in guests eager to try their luck 78 days after resorts were closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Certain amenities, including buffets and shows, remain closed. Not all properties will reopen Thursday, and those that do will follow a new set of health and safety protocols. Guests can expect to see lots of plexiglass, masks and social distancing reminders.

Sanitation stations, some with handwashing sinks and others with disinfecting wipes, greeted guests at both Fremont Street corner entrances to Golden Nugget, which appeared to be the only accessible entrances to the Fremont Street Experience. A reporter didn’t notice anybody using them.

Roughly 20 percent of guests at Golden Nugget were wearing face coverings, but it appeared every employee was wearing one.

Some guests who wore face coverings wore them over their mouths but not their noses. Other masks dangled around necks while people sipped from their drinks or took a drag from cigarettes.

What an incredible representation of the zeitgeist in these Waning Days of a Free America!

Okay, I've been awake all night, unable to sleep as I literally thrum with rage over what the Gross Orange "President" and his Congressional Profiles in Cowardice are doing to MY FUCKING COUNTRY!

I'm going to turn in now, seeking whatever fitful slumber I might attain in this apoplectic state of mine. For, if I do not, this entire website shall be flooded with my increasingly-incoherent rants this day!

Trump Had Kushner Push the National Enquirer to Probe Scarborough Murder Conspiracy

Trump is so hellbent on smearing the MSNBC host that he had Jared push the Enquirer to publish the lies, sources told The Daily Beast. Even the tabloid rag wouldn’t sink that low.

President Donald Trump, via his son-in-law Jared Kushner, encouraged his pals at the notorious supermarket tabloid National Enquirer in 2017 to push the debunked conspiracy theory that MSNBC host Joe Scarborough murdered a female congressional aide, Lori Klausutis, knowledgeable sources confirmed to The Daily Beast.

More recently, the president has displayed a bizarre obsession with the allegations, even bringing it up Wednesday morning amid nationwide protests, chaos, and growing unrest, declaring on Fox News radio that he thought Scarborough “got away with murder.” Since last month, officials on Trump’s campaign and in his White House have also devoted time and resources to weighing in on the Scarborough smear.

Trump’s desire to trash the Morning Joe co-host long predates his recent and frequent ravings about the conspiracy theory while governing a country facing a global pandemic, a shattered economy, and widespread civil unrest over the death of George Floyd. In fact, the president attempted to plant the false and inflammatory tabloid story during the first year of his presidency, coinciding with a complete breakdown in his once warm relationship with the MSNBC host—a media feud that included accusations of a blackmail conspiracy and the president alleging that Scarborough’s wife and co-host Mika Brzezinski had gotten a botched, bloody facelift.

Even in late 2016, there was still a glimmer of friendship between Trump and the two longtime MSNBC personalities, as the future president would give the pair a personal tour of his prized campaign “war room,” even as he’d gleefully gossip behind their backs to random aides about the couple’s supposed Manhattan love nest.

By mid-2017, the president’s private chatter about Brzezinski and Scarborough had grown darker and more vengeful.

Yeah, kinda sucks when ya lose your pals, dunnit?

Former employees critique EPA under Trump in new report

Source: The Hill

BY RACHEL FRAZIN - 06/04/20 12:01 AM EDT

A group of former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employees has released a report condemning the direction the agency has gone under President Trump.

In the report released early Thursday, the group called Save EPA wrote that the Trump administration has been relentless in its efforts to “roll back public health and environmental protections, weaken enforcement of those protections, and cripple EPA’s capacity to address new and existing problems.”

“Virtually all the changes that Trump has made have one thing in common: They help polluters and harm the public, now and in the future,” the report said.

The report also documented what it described as a “slowing down” of enforcement. It said that in 2018, the number of inspections or evaluations to determine legal compliance was less than 60 percent of the annual average since 2001 and that the number of criminal cases opened was about a third of the levels reported between 2008 and 2013.
