Georgia voters endure hours-long lines and broken voting machines in 'complete meltdown' at polls

Georgia voters endure hours-long lines and broken voting machines in ‘complete meltdown’ at polls

Under the pall of the coronavirus pandemic, Georgia Democrats headed to the voting booth on Tuesday in a chaotic primary for president and to pick a candidate for what could be a marquee matchup in their push to retake the Senate.

Voters waited as long as five hours to cast ballots in some Georgia precincts amid reports of voting machine malfunctions and high turnout in a state that President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden are expected to hotly contest in the fall.

Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger called the widespread problems “unacceptable” around lunchtime and launched an official investigation.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms slammed the major problems in-person polling places as voting got underway in the heavily Democratic city.

Trump's base instincts on display amid reckoning over Floyd's death

Trump's base instincts on display amid reckoning over Floyd's death

With a single tweet Tuesday, President Donald Trump showed why his attempts to leverage liberal calls to "defund the police" to harm Democrat Joe Biden will likely fail but could further polarize America's national reckoning over race.

Trump effectively glorified police violence, questioning whether a video of a 75-year-old protester in Buffalo, New York, who was seriously injured after being shoved by police officers, was a "set up." Trump claimed that the man, Martin Gugino, "fell harder than he was pushed."

Tuesday's stunning intervention by Trump showed why White House plans being considered for a national presidential address on unity and race are unlikely to ease the President's current political plight five months before Election Day. More importantly, it reflected the impossible task that Trump may have in bringing the country together and the way in which his campaign's plans to focus on a coherent, hardline strategy against Biden will likely be constantly undermined by the President's impulses.

The 'Black Lives Matter' mural near the White House has inspired street paintings across the US. Is it enough to bring change?

A massive 'BLACK LIVES MATTER' mural painted on the street leading to the White House captured the world's attention last week — an eye-opening visual that, remarkably, is large enough to show up on satellite images.

It also captured the imagination of artists, community activists and local officials across the nation seeking ways to express themselves in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer pinned his knee to Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, a group of residents painted 'End Racism Now' in large, bright yellow letters on Sunday in front of the Contemporary Art Museum.

Charman Driver, a community activist and museum board member who led the effort, told USA TODAY on Monday that she was inspired by the street art in Washington. She originally wanted to paint the mural in front of the state capitol to demand the removal of Confederate monuments near the building.

"This ongoing glorification of the Confederacy, especially here in the south, through memorials on public property, just has to end," Driver said.

U.S. Army veteran stunned by negative reaction to Kaepernick kneeling

(Reuters) – A former member of the U.S. Army Special Forces who advised Colin Kaepernick that kneeling during the national anthem would be a more respectful protest than remaining seated on the bench says he had no idea the gesture would become so controversial.

Nate Boyer, who served six years in the Army and also tried out for Seattle as a long snapper, met with Kaepernick in 2016 when the then-San Francisco quarterback began his protests aimed at drawing attention to police brutality against minorities.

Boyer had written a piece in an Army newspaper about the protests, which involved the quarterback sitting on the sidelines during the customary pre-game airing of the anthem, and said Kaepernick sought him out for advice.

“The thoughts that ran through my head about kneeling were of pictures in the history books of somebody kneeling before the king to be knighted, somebody proposing to their wife, taking a knee to pray in the Catholic Church,” Boyer told Reuters.

“I just couldn’t think in any way that it could be construed as disrespectful.”

Florida chapter of Fraternal Order of Police tells disciplined, jailed cops 'we are hiring'

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police posted a now deleted advertisement over the weekend calling on those officers involved in violent incidents in Buffalo and Atlanta to join the ranks of local police agencies, drawing howls of outrage from citizens across Florida.

"Hey Buffalo 57... and Atlanta 6... we are hiring in Florida. Lower taxes, no spineless leadership, or dumb mayors rambling on at press conferences... Plus... we got your back! #lawandorderFlorida," reads the June 6 post made at 1:21 a.m on the Brevard County FOP Facebook page. The post, deleted sometime Monday morning garnered over 2,000 comments and 1,000 shares.

Why Republican senators have to stop hiding from Trump's tweets

On Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted a conspiracy theory that an elderly man hurt in a confrontation with police in Buffalo was somehow affiliated with Antifa -- and may have faked the extent of his injuries.

By Tuesday afternoon, Republican senators were already playing out a familiar routine when it comes to the President's tweets: Pleading total ignorance.

"I didn't see it," Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said of the Trump tweet. "You're telling me about it. I don't read Twitter. I only write on it."

Colorado GOP Sen. Cory Gardner told reporters on Capitol Hill that he had not seen the tweet and "didn't want to look at it," according to Politico's Burgess Everett. (Everett had the Trump tweet printed out, offering to allow any senator who claimed to not have seen it the opportunity to read it and then comment on it.)

"I'm not going to comment on the President's tweets," said Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican in the chamber.

If those responses sound familiar to you, they should. It's the same thing most Republican elected officials said when Trump suggested on Twitter, with zero evidence, that former Florida Rep. Joe Scarborough was somehow involved in the death of a young aide in his district office in the early 2000s. Or when Trump tweeted that members of the so-called "Squad" -- four freshman Congresswomen of color -- should "go back" to the countries they came from. (Three of the four women were born in the United States; the other is a naturalized American citizen.) Or when Trump attacked former Defense Secretary James Mattis. Or former chief of staff John Kelly.

Webster police chief responds to backlash for lying down in solidarity with protesters

Town officials in Webster are standing in solidarity with their police chief as he responds to backlash for lying down at a protest Saturday demonstrating against the killing of George Floyd.

Police Chief Michael Shaw lied face down with his hands behind his back on the steps of his station for eight minutes, the length of time a Minneapolis police officer knelt on Floyd’s neck as he pleaded he couldn’t breathe, during the protest, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.

In an interview with the protest’s organizers ahead of the event, Shaw called the killing of Floyd “disgusting” and “disturbing,” saying he believed the country was at a tipping point and that citizens needed to be educated about the problems of systemic racism.

“This is the first time that I can remember in my law enforcement career where you actually see police alongside the protesters, lockstep,” he said. “We’re in agreement. What happened was wrong. And yes, there’s a problem. Let’s fix it.”

Top Democrats demand answers on Trump administration's 'unfathomable' consideration of nuclear testing

A group of top House Democrats is demanding answers from the Trump administration on reported conversations within the administration on whether to resume nuclear testing.

"It is unfathomable that the administration is considering something so short-sighted and dangerous, and that directly contradicts its own 2018 Nuclear Posture Review," the lawmakers wrote in a letter Monday to Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette and Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

The posture review, the lawmakers wrote, "which this administration often cites as inviolable, makes clear that 'the United States will not resume nuclear explosive testing unless necessary to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.' "

A 9-year-old and her friends raised $40,000 for black-owned businesses by selling homemade bracelets

The protests in Minneapolis and across the country are resonating with people of all ages, leaving many wondering what they can do to help.

Kamryn Johnson, 9, the daughter of former NFL player Ron Johnson, had an idea. She lives in Chanhassen, Minn. — about a 20-minute drive from where George Floyd was killed while in police custody.

Kamryn and five of her friends, who live in the same neighborhood and have been isolating during the novel coronavirus pandemic in a four-family bubble, sprang into action.

With Kamryn at the helm, the children — ages 5 to 12 — started making colorful string bracelets to sell, with all proceeds going toward helping Minneapolis communities in need.
