Michigan State Police trooper pulls unconscious driver out of burning vehicle on I-94

Dashcam footage shows a Michigan State Police trooper pulling an unconscious driver out of a burning pickup truck on eastbound I-94 Tuesday morning.

Officers were dispatched to the area of I-94 and Haggerty Road near Belleville in Wayne County at around 6:15 a.m. for a car and attached boat engulfed in flames, according to officials.

Troopers found the driver, a 63-year-old male, slumped over the steering wheel unconscious. An officer attempted to break the passenger side window using his baton, having to then use his hands to push the window in due to tints on the front windows, sustaining cuts to his arms and hands, according to officials said.

New York City will name a street 'Black Lives Matter' in each burough

New York City will name a street at a "crucial" location in each borough for "Black Lives Matter," Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday.

"What will be clear — the street name and on the streets of our city — is that message that now this city must fully, fully deeply feel and this nation must as well, that Black Lives Matter," de Blasio said.

One of the locations will be near City Hall, and the other locations will be decided with participants, activists and city leaders, de Blasio said.

"Black Lives Matter" will also be painted on the streets.

Nation's largest police union says it doesn't 'want to protect bad cops' as calls for reform mount

The president of the nation's largest police union said he was open to a plan for tracking officer misconduct as recommended in legislation proposed by congressional Democrats, but maintained that any agreement hinged on providing officers the right to defend themselves against potentially wrongful allegations.

"We don't want to protect bad cops," Fraternal Order of Police President Patrick Yoes told USA TODAY. "We all felt that there are a lot of areas that we could build on. Due process (for officers) is a very big point with us. ... We very much want to be at the table working at improving the criminal justice system."

But Yoes said that increasing calls for dramatic funding reductions or the dismantling of entire police agencies do not promote needed "order" in a nation still reeling from weekslong protests following the brutal death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, who was pinned under the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer.

More Food Shortages Loom With Outbreaks at 60 U.S Plants

(Bloomberg) -- A caravan of vehicles decorated with black ribbons and memorial pictures crawled through Yakima, Washington, last week to mark the death of David Cruz, a 60-year-old fruit warehouse employee who died after contracting coronavirus. The county, a hub of agricultural activity where workers jam into often crowded factories to package apples and other foods, has the highest per capita infection rate on the West Coast.

It’s a grim reality that’s playing out across the country as Covid-19 spreads beyond the meat plants that have captured the national spotlight. At least 60 food-processing facilities outside the meatpacking industry have seen outbreaks, with more than 1,000 workers diagnosed with the virus, according to a new study from Environmental Working Group.

Americans may not know who won on election night

WASHINGTON — A surge of mail-in votes and a potential Senate runoff could force Americans to wait days — or more — to learn who won control of the White House or Congress.

Experts are alarmed by the lack of readiness in some states to efficiently process an expected surge of mail-in ballots. Swing states like Pennsylvania and Michigan haven't historically dealt with large-scale mail-in voting and are constrained by rules saying mailed ballots cannot begin to be counted until Election Day.

President Donald Trump carried the two states by razor-thin margins in 2016 before he was projected to be the winner late into the night. But this fall, experts warn that hours could turn into days as state officials frantically verify signatures and tally up mailed ballots that could tilt the result.

"There is no chance that we will know on election night the full vote total in Michigan," Marc Elias, an election lawyer with prominent Democratic clients, told NBC News. "Neither Michigan nor Pennsylvania have a history of large numbers of absentee ballots being cast. And Michigan law prohibits the absentee ballots from even starting to be counted until polls are closed."

Report: NBA won’t test players for marijuana in Disney World bubble

NBA players will face tight restrictions while playing high-stakes games in the Disney World bubble. It sounds stressful.

But at least players will be able to unwind with marijuana without league punishment.

Shams Charania of The Athletic:
-----------
@ShamsCharania
"Sources: The NBA and NBPA have agreed to conduct performance-enhancing drug testing during resumed 2019-20 season in Orlando — but tests for recreational drugs will remain suspended."
11:53 AM - Jun 8, 2020
-----------

The NBA reportedly stopped drug testing players during its coronavirus hiatus. Will the league ever test for marijuana again?

NBA commissioner Adam Silver feared the message that’d be sent to children if the NBA relaxed its marijuana policy. This could be an opportunity to slide into allowing it.

From Donating to Volunteering: Here’s How to Support Black Lives Matter, Protesters and Equality Initiatives

As the nation reels from the police killing of George Floyd and reckons with institutional racism, many are left wondering: what can they do?

Tens of thousands of people have already shown up to protests across the country—in both big cities and rural towns—to demand racial justice and sweeping changes, from police reforms like mandatory body cameras and implicit-bias training, to defunding the institution and allocating city or state budget funds to community groups.

If you want to show up for the cause but are not able to protest in the streets, there are many ways to engage, from educating yourself to volunteering, spreading awareness and donating money.

You can donate to Black Lives Matter, which was founded in 2013 after the neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot Trayvon Martin was acquitted.

Support programs that support racial justice and equality

You can also consider organizations committed to ending mass incarceration and extreme sentencing, like the Equal Justice Initiative, which provides legal representation to people who have been wrongly convicted, unfairly sentenced or abused in state jails and prisons. Some groups, like the National Council For Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, are particularly focused on helping female inmates and ex-convicts.

Greg Abbott, Texas governor, says George Floyd is 'going to change to arc of the future of the United States'

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott acknowledged the grief and magnitude of George Floyd's death on Monday, saying Floyd is going to "change the arc of the future of the United States."

"This is the most horrific tragedy I've ever personally observed," said Abbott, a Republican. "George Floyd is going to change the arc of the future of the United States. George Floyd has not died in vain. His life will be a living legacy about the way that America and Texas respond to this tragedy."

In his comments -- which came ahead of a private meeting with Floyd's family and at a time of several memorials for Floyd, including a public viewing held in Houston -- Abbott did not outline specific changes he'd like to see in his state, and messages left with his office were not immediately returned Tuesday morning. But his emotional response was in striking contrast to public remarks made by many other Republican leaders, including President Donald Trump, who have largely called for order to be restored to American streets rather than addressing the underlying racial tensions behind the recent unrest.
