Salon: Trump declares "war" -- and, yes, our full-blown constitutional crisis is here
On OCTOBER 9, 2019 1:00PM (UTC), Heather Digby Parton writes:
But that's beside the point. This document signals that the White House has decided to formally defy the Congress and challenge its clear constitutional power to check a president who has committed treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. The Trump administration has declared that the concept of checks and balances is no longer operative in the United States Constitution. In fact, I don't know if we can be sure anyone in the White House or the Republican Party thinks the Constitution is still operative at all.
As Stephen Colbert put it late on Tuesday:

It wasn't just the comedians saying so. Conservative legal scholars and Republican insiders have joined in.

China criticizes Apple for app that tracks Hong Kong police

Apple became the latest company targeted for Chinese pressure over protests in Hong Kong when the ruling Communist Party's main newspaper criticized the tech giant Wednesday for a smartphone app that allows activists to report police movements.

HKmap.live, designed by an outside supplier and available on Apple's online store, "facilitates illegal behaviour," People's Daily said in a commentary.
"Is Apple guiding Hong Kong thugs?" the newspaper said.
Beijing has pressed companies including Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways to take the government's side against the protests, which are in their fourth month.

Turkey says it won't bow to US threat over its Syria plans

BEIRUT (AP) Turkey will not bow to threats over its Syria plans, the Turkish vice president said Tuesday in an apparent response to President Donald Trumps warning to Ankara the previous day about the scope of its planned military incursion into northeastern Syria.
Trump said earlier this week the United States would step aside for an expected Turkish attack on Syrian Kurdish fighters, who have fought alongside Americans for years, but he then threatened to destroy the Turks economy if they went too far.
The U.S. president later cast his decision to abandon the Kurdish fighters in Syria as fulfilling a campaign promise to withdraw from endless war in the Middle East, even as Republican critics and others said he was sacrificing a U.S. ally and undermining American credibility.
Trumps statements have reverberated on all sides of the divide in Syria and the Mideast. In Ankara, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said Turkey was intent on combatting Syrian Kurdish fighters across its border in Syria and on creating a zone that would allow Turkey to resettle Syrian refugees there.
Where Turkeys security is concerned, we determine our own path but we set our own limits, Oktay said.

Key Republicans split with Trump on Biden investigation push

BY ALEXANDER BOLTON - 10/06/19 06:00 AM EDT
President Trump is pushing hard for an investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, but the prospect of using the Oval Office to go after a political rival is prompting some GOP senators to speak out.
Sens. Mitt Romney (Utah), Susan Collins (Maine), Ben Sasse (Neb.) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.) have raised concerns, to varying degrees, about launching a politically motivated probe into the Bidens
Romney on Friday said Trump's call for China to investigate Biden was "wrong and appalling. "When the only American citizen President Trump singles out for Chinas investigation is his political opponent in the midst of the Democratic nomination process, it strains credulity to suggest that it is anything other than politically motivated," Romney said in a statement, which he also tweeted.
A day later, Collins said it was "completely inappropriate" for Trump to urge China to investigate Biden and his son. "I thought the president made a big mistake by asking China to get involved in investigating a political opponent," Collins told the Bangor Daily News. "Its completely inappropriate."

Ex-officer not guilty of manslaughter in Georgia shooting
Source: Associated Press
WOODBINE, Ga. (AP) A former Georgia police officer who fatally shot a fleeing, unarmed black man was acquitted Saturday of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.
The jury, however, found Zechariah Presley guilty of violating his oath of office in the 2018 shooting of Tony Green, 33, in coastal Camden County near the Georgia-Florida state line. Presley was ordered to be jailed pending sentencing Oct. 18. He faces a prison term of one to five years.
Presley sat silently at the defense table. Greens relatives wiped away tears after the verdict was read.
Pastor Mack DeVon Knight, whose church Green attended, denounced the acquittals outside the courthouse, saying the evidence was open and shut.
He admitted that he killed Tony Green in cold blood, Knight said. To me, its hunting season for the young black man and were being gunned down in the streets and theres no repercussions, theres no consequences for these officers.

Can anyone rebut what Pastor Knight is saying? 'cause I sure as hell can't!
