Russian politician files legal challenge over Putin's reference to Ukraine "war"

Source: Reuters

A St Petersburg politician has asked prosecutors to investigate Russian President Vladimir Putin for using the word “war” to describe the conflict in Ukraine, accusing the Kremlin chief of breaking his own law.

Putin has for months described his invasion as a “special military operation”. He signed laws in March that prescribe steep fines and jail terms for discrediting or spreading “deliberately false information” about the armed forces, putting people at risk of prosecution if they call the war by its name.

But he departed from his usual language on Thursday when he told reporters: “Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war.”

Nikita Yuferev, an opposition councillor in the city where Putin was born, said he knew his legal challenge would go nowhere, but he had filed it to expose the “mendacity” of the system.

Putin has another tRump stupid moment, breaks his own law

Putin yesterday publicly acknowledged that his invasion of Ukraine was a “war” for the first time since he ordered his troops to invade Ukraine in February, after 10 months of calling his campaign a “special military operation”.

Nikita Yuferev, an opposition councillor in St Petersburg, has asked prosecutors to investigate Putin for using the word “war”, and accused the president of breaking his own law.

In an open letter, he asked the prosecutor general and interior minister to “hold (Putin) responsible under the law for spreading fake news about the actions of the Russian army”.

He told Reuters that he knew his legal challenge would go nowhere, but he had filed it to expose the “mendacity” of the system.

Report: Russia is recruiting US trained Afghan commandos to fight in Ukraine Per Guardian Live feed

Russia is purportedly recruiting members of Afghanistan’s national army commando corps to fight in Ukraine, Foreign Policy is reporting.

These are the commandos that were trained by US navy seals and British armed forces. About 20,000 to 30,000 of the volunteer commandos were left behind when the US left Afghanistan in Taliban control in August 2021.

According to FP, only a few hundred senior officers were evacuated before the republic collapsed. While thousands escaped to neighbouring countries as the Taliban hunted and executed collaborators with the collapsed government, many more remain in Afghanistan, in hiding.

The US spent $90bn building the Afghan national defence and security forces.

the reason for invading Ukraine has changed for the 3rd time, now its because of desatanisation

First it was Nazis, than the Wests fault & now this per The Guardian live feed:

Vladimir Putin justified the invasion of Ukraine with claims of the need to “denazify” the country. Yesterday, Russia’s security council pivoted from “denazification” to “desatanisation”, with Aleksey Pavlov, assistant secretary of the security council of the Russian Federation, claiming there were “hundreds of sects” in Ukraine where citizens have abandoned Orthodox values.

Twitter Tumbles as US Weighs Security Reviews for Musk Deals

Source: bloomberg

Biden administration officials are discussing whether the US should subject some of Elon Musk's ventures to national security reviews, including the deal for Twitter Inc. and SpaceX's Starlink satellite network, according to people familiar with the matter.

Twitter shares fell 5.1% as the market opened in New York on Friday.

US officials have grown uncomfortable over Musk's recent threat to stop supplying the Starlink satellite service to Ukraine -- he said it had cost him $80 million so far -- and what they see as his increasingly Russia-friendly stance following a series of tweets that outlined peace proposals favorable to President Vladimir Putin. They are also concerned by his plans to buy Twitter with a group of foreign investors.

The discussions are still at an early stage, the people familiar said on condition of anonymity. Officials in the US government and intelligence community are weighing what tools, if any, are available that would allow the federal government to review Musk's ventures.

Another article mention worries over a Saudi prince' 9 bil investment in the deal with musk, that worries me too.

from business insider: A Twitter user replied to a post about the Bloomberg article saying "it would be hysterical if the government stopped Elon from over paying for Twitter." Musk replied to the tweet with the "100" emoji and a rolling-on-the-floor-laughing emoji.

Germany to pay December gas bills for households and businesses

The German state is to pay this December’s monthly gas bill for all households and small- to medium-sized businesses, according to a phased two-stage cap on energy prices recommended by a government-appointed expert panel on Monday.

Under the scheme, the one-off full reimbursement in December would be followed up next spring with a more differentiated subsidy scheme designed to cap bills but still incentivise people to save energy.

Taiwan politicians dismiss Elon Musk's 'ill-informed and belittling' China comments

Musk, the world’s richest person, suggested giving China some control over the island to resolve the cross-strait dispute

Taiwanese politicians have dismissed comments from Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, that allowing China to have some control over the island would resolve the cross-strait dispute, urging him to respect the wishes of Taiwan’s citizens.

Musk’s suggestion to “figure out a special administrative zone for Taiwan that is reasonably palatable,” given in an interview with the Financial Times on Saturday, was welcomed by China’s ambassador to the US.

The ambassador, Qin Gang, said “peaceful reunification and ‘one country two systems’ are our basic principles for resolving the Taiwan question … and the best approach to realising national reunification.”

Ukrainian troops report outages of Musk Starlink devices

Ukrainian troops have reported outages of their Starlink communication devices while fighting on the frontline, according to Ukrainian officials and soldiers.

The disruptions have hindered efforts to liberate territory from Russian forces, with some of the outages resulting in a “catastrophic” loss of communication in recent weeks, the Financial Times cited one senior Ukrainian government official as saying.

Many of the outages were reported as troops breached the frontline into Russian-controlled territory and some during pitched battles, according to the official.

They were acute in the south around the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, but also took place along the frontline in eastern Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk, the Ukrainian official said.
