Where is the protection product going?

“I’m putting volume into that system”

[link:https://mobile.twitter.com/DavidBegnaud/status/1245841458323771393|]

This seems to be a government official trying to explain what happens to the product they buy.

It’s to use the distributors. Like many of us predicted. But if these are the 6 distributors who are experts at this why aren’t they buying the product directly?

No mention of any requirements to distribute the product to healthcare facilities let alone where it is needed the most

Sounds like I expected. The hospitals lose the bids to the government and then get to rebid from the distributors selected by the administration

Or am I reading to much into this?

Hospitals say feds are seizing masks and other coronavirus supplies without a word

Source: LA Times

Although President Trump has directed states and hospitals to secure what supplies they can, the federal government is quietly seizing orders, leaving medical providers across the country in the dark about where the material is going and how they can get what they need to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Hospital and clinic officials in seven states described the seizures in interviews over the past week. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is not publicly reporting the acquisitions, despite the outlay of millions of dollars of taxpayer money, nor has the administration detailed how it decides which supplies to seize and where to reroute them.

Officials who’ve had materials seized also say they’ve received no guidance from the government about how or if they will get access to the supplies they ordered. That has stoked concerns about how public funds are being spent and whether the Trump administration is fairly distributing scarce medical supplies.

“In order to have confidence in the distribution system, to know that it is being done in an equitable manner, you have to have transparency,” said Dr. John Hick, an emergency physician at Hennepin Healthcare in Minnesota who has helped develop national emergency preparedness standards through the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

See the other article about how Massachusetts got by the feds.

Massachusetts runs counter operation against feds for masks

I missed this story or at least the connection between the two. The thread title is mine not the article’s. The story article’s headline is just that 3 million masks were confiscated. I didn’t connect that with the story about the patriots owner flying them in. The article makes that connection.

[link:https://www.wwlp.com/news/massachusetts/3-million-masks-ordered-by-massachusetts-seized-at-port-of-ny-in-march|]

During a news conference on Thursday, Gov. Charlie Baker said he reached out to the New England Patriots when he found himself in need of assistance to bring masks from China to Massachusetts after the ones ordered by the state were confiscated at a New York Port in March.

On Thursday, the Patriots team plane “AirKraft” brought approximately 1.2 million N95 masks from China to Boston. Massachusetts National Guardsmen met the plane at Boston’s Logan Airport and offloaded the masks onto trucks to be distributed to hospitals in Massachusetts and New York.

........

Gov. Baker said to the media on Thursday, the state had ordered 3 million masks through BJ’s Wholesale in early March but they were confiscated at the Port in New York, State House News Service reported. The governor did not say which agency or organization confiscated the masks. It is also unclear where the 3 million masks went.

These are the lengths governors have to go to to secure protective gear.

Btw is there an easy way to de-ampifying a link? It takes me a bit of manual deleting here and there

Coronavirus is revealing how broken America's economy really is

From the guardian
[link:https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2020/apr/06/coronavirus-american-reaction-economy-covid-19|]

When Susan Finley developed flu-like symptoms, she didn’t go to the doctor because she was frightened about the cost. Finley’s grandparents later found her dead in her apartment. She was 53.

Finley did not die as a result of Covid-19. She died in 2016 as a result of America’s healthcare system – a system that led her to avoid treatment for the common flu in order to avoid debt. It is that same system that is currently creaking under the pressure of a pandemic that experts warned was coming but governments failed to prepare for. It is a system that does not qualify for the term “developed”.

......

There are 2.9 hospital beds for every 1,000 people in the United States. That’s fewer than Turkmenistan (7.4 beds per 1,000), Mongolia (7.0), Argentina (5.0) and Libya (3.7). In fact, the US ranks 69th out of 182 countries analyzed by the World Health Organization. This lack of hospital beds is forcing doctors across the country to ration care under Covid-19, pushing up the number of preventable deaths.

America’s numbers are similarly unimpressive when it comes to medical doctors. The United States has 2.6 doctors per 1,000 people, placing it behind Trinidad & Tobago (2.7), and Russia (4.0 doctors per 1,000, for a country that is described as being “in transition”). Life expectancies at birth are lower in the US than they are in Chile or China. The US has a higher maternal mortality rate than Iran or Saudi Arabia.

I think I’ve read much of this before but the article is from today and I found it interesting.

small relief

Turned my tuner on and battery was dead. Small thing but it was a relief to find I still had some. I like using a headstock tuner.

What small things have given you some relief?

What does post peak look like?

Is there anything good to read about that?

I’m not going to second guess what epidemiologists think. I have read there is a range of estimates and am guessing that peak will occur at different times. I’m curious about thing like

What does the other side of the peak look like? We were slow to lock down and people have been tightening up their isolation. Is it likely to be a slow decline or match the build up or something else?

What makes it the peak? How much does isolation vs immunity vs other factors play in stopping the increase?

At some point scientists will say it’s ok to go out at least in some communities. What’s needed in terms of random testing or other triggers that would cause us to quickly go back to lock down. I’ve read there could be multiple waves

What are the next best steps and what is needed? If we had antibody and infection tests readily available how would those be used? For example, if i knew I was immune and not infectious would that mean it’s ok to be around or would that just make others more likely to inappropriately end isolation?

We are fortunate enough to be working from home. We’re going to be very slow in ending isolation not just to avoid infection but to not risk infecting others.

We need an immediate covid 19 plan

We need immediate plan to deal with the virus. Unfortunately most of the immediate actions have to be taken by the executive branch which is run by a moron.

We have passed the point where this could be contained by monitoring people who travelled and their contacts. We have to cast a much wider net.

A lot of us got told over the past week to work from home. Until end of month seems to be the message but that’s not going to be enough. The infectious window is longer apparently.

Containment is going to need massive testing and isolation or the infection will spread. Maybe it burns out naturally but that’s a horrible strategy. Testing has to be free and readily available. How many kits have been ordered and what is our lab capacity for test processed per day? Are the logistics of where to go for testing and where the results will be processed and how the notifications will be handled all been worked out?

All of that should be publicly available and tracked. That’s what i want the media to focus on. I don’t care what anyone says, I want the status tracked and reported daily. That’s the only way to know they aren’t still screwing up and lying.

What are our treatment plans. If we don’t bend the infection rate down soon there will be too many patients. Do we have plans to set up treatment centers if necessary? We need a better plan than waiting and hoping hospitals don’t become overwhelmed. Figure out where to set up temporary centers and start the logistical work and hope we don’t need it.

We need to deal with the immediate economic issue that people can’t afford to stay home. Testing isn’t going to work if we don’t deal with that. Tested positive and can’t afford it, go to work. Force positive people to quarantine and people won’t test until the are sick and have been infectious for two weeks.

Longer term economic consequences need to be addressed but stopping the virus from spreading also lessens those.

Thanks for the hearts. Anyone catch the moonrise?

Just got home. Was walking in an area where house lights ran out for a while. Pretty dark.

Then the moon started coming over the mountain. 00:44. Bright! My eyes had adjusted. Little over half moon it looked like.

Pretty

It’s easier to walk in moonlight.

Jury nullification

None of these threads on what bernie and biden said in the 80s is convincing anyone.

I hope the more recent threads that both want to cut social security are not convincing any one either. The republicans want to divide us and then screw us further.

It is self defeating.

Don’t know if it’s legal to say so but I don’t care at this point. I will vote to hide any threads like that.

Point out current differences and faults all day, but I’m tired of threads fighting past primaries, elections and that downgrade democratic candidates.
