NY Times has an internet feature about shopping recommendations. Last week's was on insect repellent

Their top recommendation was "Ranger Ready" picaridin spray. I bought a bottle from Amazon.

Background: I volunteer weekly, in the N.J. Great Swamp Watershed Association for trail maintenance and building or repairing boardwalks over the water. The place swarms with mosquitos. We wear upper torso mosquito nets and still get one or two bites per work day.

Today, I applied the spray to my arms, face, neck and hair. I put on the net but did not wear it over my head. I figured that if I was getting bites, I would pull the net over my head. I walked through two swarms of mosquitos.... NOT ONE BITE.

It works.

(I do not work for the company, I do not sell the product, I do not have stock in the company.)

No more tears, chopping onions.

A couple of months ago, I read that if we put onions in a freezer, about 15 minutes before chopping then, no more eye irritation.

I tried it tonight. It works.

Requesting your non-legal, non-attorney opinion.

Daughter's '12 Honda fried its transmission. local opinion recommends the guy who is slow but does good work.... and he is inexpensive.

So she drops the car off, December 30th.

Guess what? It still isn't fixed. She is worried that if she pulls the car from his shop, she owes him for work that he did. Andshe will have to pay the Honda dealer to fix it.

He ordered a junk yard transmission and installed it. He started it up and drove it out of the driveway. Now something else is wrong with it.

Your thoughts? Does she have a legal remedy? Small claims court?

Please explain the Wagner attack over the weekend. Wagner forces were heading towards Moscow.

Seemingly unopposed and even welcomed by residents of localities that they passed through.

Reports were that Lukkie and Puttie "left Dodge."

Then, Wagner suddenly stopped.

I don't get why they stopped.

Thoughts?

We got Eric Prince. We're lucky.

His mercenaries will protect us from any domestic insurrection. So yiz all can rest easy tonight.

"You were not the mother I wanted."

My friend's daughter texted this to her, last week. The two of them have had a difficult time over the last 15 years.

My two kids --- well, I get along better with my two stepdaughters than I do with my direct offspring.

So the question: What is/was the mother - father you wanted?

I got pretty lucky with the parent I had. I was an only child so all attention was on me. We were working class poor, so I didn't always get the new baseball glove I wanted or such. But they were there at school concerts. They volunteered as scout leaders. -- the outward things that are observable and quantifiable.

The thing of it is, I knew I was wanted. Even when I fucked up on many occasions, I knew I was wanted.

But I didn't "want" them. They were not "cool" like Mr. & Mrs. A, up the street. Or my father didn't have a good, high paying job like most of the men in my community. The town I grew up in, is one of the 10 wealthiest zip codes in the nation.

You? What was the parent you wanted.

Unabomber just died.

So ya gotta riddle me this. God is all knowing and God - well nothin' goes on without God's plan

and permission. Actually, it goes beyond permission. Whatever goes on, God wants it to happen.

So ----

Joe gets diagnosed with cancer. What are we supposed to do? We're supposed to pray that Joe's cancer goes away. But here's the problem. God wanted Joe to get cancer or else he wouldn't have gotten it.

Now it we get to praying that Joe don't get no more cancer, aren't we also saying that God fucked up by giving Joe the cancer in the first place?

All of this comes to mind because of my cousin in California. She is being evicted for non-payment of rent. She will likely be out on the street by next month. I'm trying to tell her she needs to find another job because she got fired last week. That she needs to go through her stuff and figure out what papers she needs and secure those. Start trying to sell stuff that she won't be able to secure --- and so forth.

"I'm not worried. God will help me out. He always does."

I am tempted to point out my argument above, as it pertains to her present circumstances. But that would do no good. The point is, that this thinking causes people to avoid actually taking actions that would maybe solve some of their problems.
