Illinois State Sen. Martin Sandoval Apologizes for Photo of Man Pretending to Assassinate Trump

By MOLLY OLMSTEAD

AUG 19, 2019

Martin Sandoval, an influential Democratic state senator from Illinois, apologized for a photo that surfaced from one of his fundraising events in which a man holding what appears to be a fake assault weapon points it at a man wearing a Donald Trump mask.

According to Central Illinois CBS affiliate WCIA, the Friday night event at a Chicago suburb golf club was for donors who paid a minimum of $250 to attend. A woman at the event posted photos on Facebook the next day showing both the mock assassination photos and separate photos of Sandoval standing with the man in the offending photo. Nothing in the post indicated where Sandoval was when the man holding a fake firearm posed for the photo, and it’s unclear if Sandoval knew of the incident when it happened.

“The incident that took place is unacceptable,” Sandoval said in an email to WCIA. “I don’t condone violence toward the President or anyone else. I apologize that something like this happened at my event.”

In the photo, a man points his fake firearm at another man dressed in a Mexican costume and a Trump mask. The fake Trump holds his hands to his chest, as if afraid or injured.

Beacons of hope

This story is several years old now, but it shows that even in the face of overwhelming odds a small few can inspire us and give us hope for the future.

On Friday night, hundreds of torch-wielding white nationalists marched on the University of Virginia's campus in Charlottesville.

The march came before Saturday's "Unite the Right" protest against the proposed removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Emancipation Park, formerly called Lee Park.

Fights broke out at the Friday night march, with multiple reports of counterprotesters being pepper-sprayed by the white nationalists, according to local paper the Cavalier Daily.
The groups were separated by law enforcement, who declared a wrongful assembly.

“This is not something that we thought would ever happen, that we would ever see in our lifetime," Alex Spratley, a second-year student who counterprotested, told the Cavalier Daily. "It’s wild.”

In the middle of the gathering, a small group of counterprotesters, which included students, linked arms and encircled a statue.

The El Paso Shooting and the Gamification of Terror

August 4, 2019 By Robert Evan

On August 3, 2019, at around 11am local time, initial police reports indicated that a gunman had walked into an El Paso Wal-Mart and opened fire. As of the publication of this article, at least eighteen people have died and several others have been injured. One victim was a four-month old infant. As we’ve seen with two other mass shootings this year, the killer announced the start of his rampage on 8chan’s /pol board. The poster also attached a four-page manifesto to the post, along with a document in his original post that included his name — Patrick Crusius.

Looking to an archived copy of the 8chan post, we can see that the post was made at the Unix time of 1564848920, which converts to August 3, 2019 at 4:15pm (UTC) — or, in local El Paso time (UTC-6), 10:15am, just before the first reports surfaced of a shooting in El Paso.

While all of this could technically be an extremely elaborate hoax, it would require the poster to know the suspect’s name well ahead of time. Additionally, there is the fact that the post was made before any public reports of a shooting, and even longer before the name of the suspected shooter was released to the public, and included information that matched the attack (model of weapon, targeting a heavily-Hispanic area).

This original 8chan thread was deleted almost immediately by site moderators, who by now have gotten quite experienced at pulling mass shooting threads from their website. The archived version of the post has only three responses. The first is an anon claiming that 8chan is a “board of peace” which does not condone violence. This phrasing is a meme among the anons; a mocking reference to statements that Islam is a “religion of peace”. The next poster after that said simply, “Every shabbat”, expressing his hope that mass shootings like this happen every weekend.

While this original thread was removed quite quickly, other anons have continued to post copies of the shooter’s post and links to his manifesto. I found this post roughly two hours after the shootings:

We really need to put everyone who goes to 4/8chan on a watchlist. A lot of these people like to say they are playfully trolling, but most of them are vile sociopaths that don't belong in society

This guy seems really in touch with the political landscape of America as it is right now. He really should be coaching our candidates or at least talking with every one of them to improve their messages.
