I HATE the right wing

I hate the right wing because I am a child of Belfast in the troubles. Soldiers on streets. Spotty youths at checkpoints trying to chat you up. Boyfriends shot, a childhood not born of innocence. A hard fought peace process when Ulster stopped saying no and started saying maybe. A chance at peace. The good Friday agreement is now under attack. The agreement that brought some measure of stability to my troubled land is now the subject of suspect from the right. You see Brexit to them is far more important than peace and stability in the land from which I come. Apparently, the GFA was never sustainable in the forever lands of right wing fuckery. The right wing has stolen the narrative. Brexit good whatever the cost. I remember my father once saying to me 'I will walk the streets with an Uzi in my hand before I allow an all Ireland'. My father is dead, but the wingers are very careless if they think that on both sides this is not bubbling below the surface.

Hard boarder between North and South will lead to war. They do not care. The wankers who voted for Brexit did not give it one thought. I grew up a child of the troubles. I may die as one.

PS - Your right are fuckers too

For the weary White House, Florida shooting offered a reprieve from scandals

The White House was under siege.

Domestic abuse allegations against a senior aide were ignored, pointing to a potential high-level coverup. Two Cabinet secretaries were caught charging taxpayers for luxury travel. A Playboy centerfold alleged an extramarital affair with the president. And the special counsel’s Russia investigation was intensifying. The tumult was so intense that there was fervent speculation that President Trump might even fire his chief of staff.

But a gun massacre at a Florida high school last Wednesday, which left 17 dead, seemed to shift the media glare away from the Trump scandals and gave embattled aides an opportunity to refocus on handling a rare crisis not of their own making. While the White House mourned the loss of life in Parkland, Fla., some aides privately acknowledged that the tragedy offered a breather from the political storm.
------------

“For everyone, it was a distraction or a reprieve,” said one White House official, speaking anonymously to reflect internal conversations. “A lot of people here felt like it was a reprieve from seven or eight days of just getting pummeled.”

Gable wall 'Graffiti'

Heading to a meeting in South East London. GPS on the phone at the ready - looked up and saw this! Pretty damn cool.

A silhouette of Winston made up of his most famous speeches from WW2 in the most random of places. I love London.

White nationalists and Twitter bots fueled the war against Al Franken and the Democrats fell for it

A group of fake news sites, white nationalists and far-right fake Twitter accounts were reportedly behind the campaign against Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), and Democrats fell for it.

According a report from Unhack the Vote, while everyone was focused on the Russian meddling of the 2016 election, another campaign was being run out of Japan. Leeann Tweeden’s initial allegation against Franken was quickly turned into propaganda after being hinted at by Trump ally Roger Stone.

------------------

Just days prior to Democrats calling for Franken to step down, the fake news sites republished a article from a smaller site by Ijeoma Oluo, urging women and activists to stop their defenses from Franken. “Dear Al Franken, I’ll Miss You But You Can’t Matter Anymore,” was its title. Thousands of fake Twitter accounts then ensured the article spread.

From there, Senate Democrats, lead by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) went on the attack and demanded Franken resign.

The introduction of religious passion into politics is the end of honest politics....

......and the introduction of politics into religion is the prostitution of true religion”

Lord Hailsham 1872-1950

Just a great quote I saw today.

Abandoned Remnants

A ruined Manor House in Oxfordshire - abandoned by the family in the 16th Century and left to run to ruin. Stunning place for a visit.

Republicans only care about debt when there's a Democrat in the White House

Yet Trump is no aberration; nor is he an outlier in his party. The reality is that there has never been any kind of “ideological consistency” in favour of balanced budgets or “loathing” of deficit spending on the part of the GOP. Rather, Republicans cynically scream about debts and deficits when a Democrat is in the White House, only to then run up much bigger debts and deficits once a Republican takes over the top job.

Consider the historical record. Except for Barack Obama, who entered office in the midst of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, every single Democratic president of the postwar period (Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton) has reduced the national debt as a proportion of GDP. In stark contrast, none of the Republican presidents since Richard Nixon left office in 1974 – Ford, Reagan, Bush Sr, Bush Jr – have been able to do the same.

------------------

Remember: there is nothing new to this Republican scam. Reagan administration officials back in the 1980s called it “starving the beast”: cut taxes on the rich; increase spending on defence; force up borrowing levels; and then insist on savage cuts to social spending to balance the books. It’s all a big con. They don’t actually care about the deficit; to quote Dick Cheney, speaking in private during the first term of the Bush Jr presidency, “deficits don’t matter”.
