McFaul: "The Ukrainians will never give up"

Just now on Nicolle Wallace. He added: "They will fight forever. Until Ukraine is free."

He is someone who should know.

Olena Gnes coming up on Anderson Cooper

If you haven't seen this young mother of three, she is worth watching. Articulate, brave, funny and as far as I can tell doing a wonderful job of mothering three young children by herself while living in a basement.

Stay Calm America; Don't Make Decisions Based on Emotion

From Tom Nichols at the Atlantic:
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/03/stay-calm-and-dont-advocate-war-against-putin/624169/

snip

In my rage, I want someone somewhere to do something. I have taught military and national-security affairs for more than a quarter century, and I know what will happen when a 40-mile column of men and weapons encircles a city of outgunned defenders. I want all the might of the civilized world—a world of which Putin is no longer a part—to obliterate the invading forces and save the people of Ukraine.

snip

And yet, I still counsel caution and restraint, a position I know many Americans find impossible to understand. Every measure of our outrage is natural, as are the calls for action. But emotions should never dictate policy. As President Joe Biden emphasized in his State of the Union address, we must do all we can to aid the Ukrainian resistance and to fortify NATO, but we cannot become involved in military operations in Ukraine. ...
...Also, let’s remember that America is, in fact, taking action to help Ukraine and oppose Russia. Western sanctions will not save Kyiv or other Ukrainian cities tomorrow, but they are crippling the Russian economy and undermining Putin’s ability both politically and materially to seek a larger war. We are working with the rest of the world to get military assistance to the Ukrainians, who will be fighting a resistance for as long as the Russians are in their country.

snip

one more reason not to let our emotions get the better of us is that the only way Putin can save himself from his own fiasco is to bait the West into an attack. Nothing would help him more, at home or abroad, than if the United States or any other NATO country were to enter direct hostilities with Russian forces. Putin would then use the conflict to rally his people and threaten conventional and nuclear attacks against NATO. He would become a hero at home, and Ukraine would be forgotten.

Russians about to get a taste of Putin is a Dickhead beer

Just saw this on CNN. A brewery in Lviv began producing Putin is a Dickhead beer in 2014 during the uprising. They also learned how to make Molotov cocktails. Now they are using those bottles to make them once again. Cheers!

This brave Ukrainian mother of three is worth listening to

Olena Gnes is being interviewed now by Anderson Cooper on CNN. Very articulate and she is able to bring home the pain these people are going through now. Here is a link to her YouTube video where she talks about life in a bomb shelter (basement of a building) with three young children:

I'll try to post the Cooper interview when it is posted.

NFTs aren't art -- they're just the Cult of Crypto's latest scam

Conversation with media analyst Dan Olson. Some aren't going to like it, but he makes some salient observations.

snip

If it looks like a scam, it's probably a scam.

Cryptocurrency and its ugly art spin-off, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are perhaps the 21st century's greatest example of that eternal principle.

But don't try saying that to anyone who's been sucked into the Cult of Crypto, because the next hour — or five!— of your life is about to be spent buried in technobabble jargon to make this particular form of tulip-trading sound like it's simply mathematics on a plane too high for your small brain to comprehend.

snip (from the interview)

"The biggest problem that's been plaguing crypto since 2009 has been a lack of things to use it on and a lack of respectability that comes out of that. It's like, "nah, it's not a currency. You don't use it to buy and sell stuff." Crypto has a long history of not being spendable. There's nothing that you can actually use it on.

So NFTs effectively get built as a thing to spend crypto on. The two end up being unextractable from one another. NFTs, they're literally built on top of cryptocurrency. They literally share the same technological foundation. NFTs were basically these goods being wheeled into existence in order to provide something crypto can be spent on."

Compares to MLM schemes:

snip

"The product exists to sell the culture and the culture exists to get people to buy into the ecosystem and buy the starter pack and sign up and develop a downstream and recruit, recruit, recruit.

I think people accurately recognize that just by watching people get involved in crypto. You watch an artist who starts selling NFTs, and over the course of months, their artwork itself shifts and it starts becoming more and more about crypto itself. We see those shifts in the people around us and the people who get involved in it, it's like it becomes the singular thing that they talk about. It very much mirrors the same cultural trajectory of somebody getting involved in multi-level marketing."

My take: I don't claim to be an expert on the subject, but if it walks like a duck ...
When a friend who gets involved with every scheme from MLM to an EST-spinoff self-improvement to get rich program got into Crypto I thought here we go again.

Leonard Peltier Is America's Longest-Serving Political Prisoner and Biden May Be His Last Hope

Anyone who has followed his case knows that Peltier didn't commit the crime. It's a crime that he is ailing in prison while all kinds of slimeballs have been pardoned over the years.

Scientists skeptical about a physical cause of "Havana syndrome"

snip

Dr. Sergio Della Sala, a professor of human cognitive neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh, told Salon that he has serious doubts any kind of "syndrome" actually exists, at least based on the 2018 paper published in JAMA.

"Those data do not support the existence of a new syndrome, as the cluster of the reported symptoms are not consistent and as anyone assessed using the criteria used in the JAMA papers would result pathological," Della Sala pointed out. "It is a statistical fact."

He emphasized that this does not mean people are being untruthful when they claim to be sick. It merely indicates that the naming of a syndrome should be based on thorough scientific evidence.
"This does not undermine the fact that several people felt unwell," Della Sala explained. "However, before postulating questionable new syndromes, it may prove fruitful to analyze the data for what they tell us, exempt from political prejudices and pressure."

snip

Dr. Robert Baloh, a professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said the idea that a sonic weapon caused selective brain or inner ear damage "is not physically possible." Though the microwave weapon theory is speculative, "8 of the 21 initial 'victims' in Cuba actually recorded the sounds as they were occurring and expert analysis of the sound concluded that they were crickets. The simple fact that they were able to record the sounds rules out microwaves as the source," Baloh says.
