The rightwing Christian preachers in deep denial over Covid-19's danger

This article is a good summary of a huge issue in America we've been discussing here for a while but it seems only reporters across the pond have the guts to put it in the public spotlight in full view.

The rightwing Christian preachers in deep denial over Covid-19's danger

A number of American religious leaders have endangered their flock by holding services – and by claiming the virus can be defeated by faith in God

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/apr/04/america-rightwing-christian-preachers-virus-hoax

Excerpts:

Last Sunday in Tampa, Florida, the Pentecostal pastor and conspiracy theorist Rodney Howard-Browne conducted two services for full houses at his River church. A sometime guest on Infowars and at the White House; a multi-level marketing kingpin who has alleged that Hollywood celebrities sacrifice children and that New Zealand’s Christchurch mosque attack was a so-called false flag event; Howard-Browne described Covid-19 as a “phantom plague” on 15 March.
+++
Roy Moore, a pastor, former Alabama supreme court judge and failed Trump-backed Alabama Senate candidate who lost amid allegations of sexual misconduct with underage girls, told Facebook followers he would write a letter to his fellow pastors on what he called their “duty to continue church assemblies, even in the midst of these trying times”. Moore added: “Our faith requires it, our duty demands it, and no law or government can prohibit it.”
+++
Kenneth Copeland, a Texas-based “prosperity gospel” preacher who once defended his ownership of three private jets on the grounds that commercial flights would require him to “get in a long tube with a bunch of demons”, told viewers of his Victory Channel in early March that coronavirus was a “weak” strain of the flu, and that fearing the pandemic was a sin. “Fear is a spiritual force. Fear is not OK. It is sin. It is a magnet for sickness and disease … You are giving the devil a pathway to your body,” Copeland said. He also criticized pastors who had suspended in-person services and moved to online streaming.
+++
In a blogpost last week, Ralph Drollinger, who has led Bible study for Trump cabinet members, suggested the virus was an instrument of divine judgment, and appeared to blame LGBTQ people. Drollinger later claimed that this was a misinterpretation. Another would-be prophet, Jeremiah Johnson, claimed last week to have had a prophetic dream in which God had spoken to him.

Trump could put a stop to all this evil behavior in a matter of seconds if only he gave a shit about anything beyond maintaining power for himself and the GOP.

Luxury resorts face coronavirus crisis as the 1% flee cities for holiday hideaways

Luxury resorts face coronavirus crisis as the 1% flee cities for holiday hideaways

Ski towns and luxury retreats report rising number of cases amid concern hospitals could be overwhelmed by coronavirus patients

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/04/rural-resort-towns-coronavirus-covid-19-holiday

Excerpts:
Resort towns favored by the rich and famous are facing a coronavirus crisis as the 1% have fled cities for their holiday hideaways. As the rich have rushed to escape to their luxury retreats, local officials are reporting a disproportionate rise in Covid-19 cases and getting increasingly angry and worried about cases overwhelming small local hospitals.

In Ketchum, Idaho, the nearest city to the luxurious Sun Valley ski resort, Mayor Neil Bradshaw warned that the region was not the a place for a “virus vacation”.

In last year’s ski season, Sun Valley had 426,500 skier days. For decades, it has been a hotspot for jet-setting celebrities and billionaires including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mark Zuckerberg, Marilyn Monroe and Clint Eastwood. As of Thursday, there were 351 confirmed cases in its county, which is home to only 22,000 people.

“We must discourage friends and visitors from coming to town,” Bradshaw wrote in a column for the Idaho Mountain Express. “For a town used to welcoming visitors, that is hard to do, but we must reduce the number of people visiting our area.”

COVID-19 knows no borders and is no respecter of privilege or wealth.

Good song for the times we're in today (two versions)

Bill Withers - Lean On Me (1973 live)

Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, John Legend perform "Lean On Me" at the 2015 Induction Ceremony

Lyrics - Sing Along!

"Lean On Me"

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow.
But if we are wise,
We know that there's always tomorrow.

Lean on me when you're not strong
I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show.

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

If there is a load
You have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me.

Call me if you need a friend
Call me, call me, uh-huh
Call me when you need a friend
Call me if you ever need a friend
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me if you need a friend
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me

I'm relying on a lot of phone calls to the few good people left in my life to stay sane through this disaster and the others I've suffered in the past year. I'm going to also try and reconnect with some old friends I've been distant from for many years and see if we can touch each other's hearts.

Clearly demonstrates how bankrupt the GOP really is.

Carson and the others in tRump's administration really do believe he's doing a great job. I don't think they're consciously lying. They REALLY DO believe it. Once a man is brainwashed, he's an empty shell that parrots what he's told.

Robbed of their original selves, I see all GOP politicians as just empty shells with a talking parrot inside.

Let's all remember that what tRump's been doing all along fits perfectly in the Heritage Foundation's (and dozens of other think tanks) model for disassembling our government and handing over more assets and power to the ultra-wealthy. What he's doing in this virus crisis also fits well with their grand plan. All Carson and Trump have to do is simply stick to the script.

We, the decent people of America, simply cannot conceive of human beings thinking the way they think, although it's not really thinking. Parroting is a better word and what they're mindlessly saying originates from a cabal of people we never see.

Some folks in W's administration let the cat out of the bag as to how this really works.

Could be environmental change.

Many people are not accustomed to being cooped up in their homes most of the day and like it or not, a lot of our homes have some amounts of mold, mildew and dust mites that can set allergies off. I think a small HEPA air filtration unit is a great investment, especially for bedrooms.

Another factor in cold months is low humidity which dries out the throat and sinuses. A few years back, I bought a couple of humidity monitors for my house and was shocked at how difficult or impossible it is to raise the humidity because condensation limits humidity.

When I was traveling all over the country in my work, the insane variations in accommodations drove my sinuses crazy, and the air in airliners is extremely dry. I discovered simply by carrying a bottle of saline nasal spray on flights (and jobs like the high desert in Wyoming), I could irrigate my sinuses often and that solved a lot of problems.

I've also learned how to use the equivalent of a neti pot and make m own irrigation solution. The saline spray and netti pot also help to flush out allergens and particulates in addition to moisturizing sinus cavities.

Opinion: This hard truth about the mortgage markets isn't being told

Opinion: This hard truth about the mortgage markets isn’t being told

Real estate industry sees no problem, hears no problem, speaks no problem

Read here: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/heres-the-hard-truth-about-the-mortgage-markets-that-isnt-being-told-2020-04-02?mod=home-page

Excerpts:
Everyone wants to know what impact the coronavirus and the government response to it will have on housing markets. While it is too early to hazard a guess, some things are becoming increasingly clear.

Already, it looks as if the U.S. is moving towards a temporary moratorium on mortgage payments. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac unveiled an emergency program which provides a two-month deferral of mortgage payments for any homeowner who claims to be facing a hardship because of the virus. The payments will be tacked on at the end of the mortgage term.

The coronavirus rescue law just enacted by Congress includes a provision which requires all firms that service federally-backed mortgages to grant a forbearance of up to 360 days for any borrowers who say they have been harmed by the coronavirus outbreak.

It is not much of a stretch to say that this virus has changed everything. Many of you may sense that the virus has undermined what you thought was still a fairly strong housing market around the country. In truth, the so-called housing recovery since 2010 has been little more than a carefully constructed illusion. The belief in a strong housing recovery was carefully devised using a strategy of misleading information, withheld data and false impressions.

Hobby Lobby to close all stores, furlough all workers after defying shutdowns

Hobby Lobby to close all stores, furlough all workers after defying shutdowns

Hobby Lobby announced Friday that it will close all its stores across the country and furlough nearly all employees without pay after the company initially refused to close locations where strict stay-at-home orders were ordered in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

A statement on the company’s website said Hobby Lobby will “close the remainder of its stores, and furlough nearly all store employees and a large portion of corporate and distribution employees, effective Friday, April 3rd, at 8:00 p.m. The stores will remain closed until further notice.”

On Wednesday night, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a cease and desist to Hobby Lobby in response to its refusal to close stores in the state amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Hobby Lobby complied and said it would close stores the same night.

Snips:
Twenty-eight patients and 16 employees at a Cookeville nursing home have tested positive for the coronavirus, officials said Thursday, exposing another hot spot in a region that is still recovering from a rash of deadly tornadoes.

Lee Rooney, CEO at the facility, Signature HealthCARE of Putnam, said the nursing home cared for "the sickest of the sick." He said the virus had moved through the building despite added safety precautions, including eliminating visitors on March 9 and screening employees for symptoms each time they entered.

The facility had 320 employees and patients tested for the virus earlier this week after two COVID-19 cases were identified.

The vast majority of the 44 people in that group who ultimately tested positive were "symptom-free," Rooney said, raising the troubling possibility that they could have spread the potentially deadly virus to others without realizing they had it.

One would think those who administer nursing homes would be on top of all the news and history of spread mechanisms for this virus, especially after the horrible nursing home case in Washington state several weeks back.

How a church revival in a small KY town led to a deadly CV outbreak

How a church revival in a small Kentucky town led to a deadly coronavirus outbreak
Bailey Loosemore and Mandy McLaren,
Louisville Courier Journal

Read here: https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/2020/04/02/coronavirus-kentucky-hopkins-county-church-revival-led-outbreak/5111379002/

Excerpts:
The church revival in Hopkins County was meant to be uplifting. But on a Sunday in mid-March, it became the flash point of a coronavirus outbreak that has since spread across Kentucky, reaching into a manufacturing plant and even a county more than 200 miles away.

The event has now been linked to at least 30 cases of the virus — including three deaths, health officials have said. And more positive tests are expected. The widespread ramifications are a prime example of what can happen when people refuse to take adequate precautions, Gov. Andy Beshear said while discussing the event Wednesday.

On Thursday, The Courier Journal learned more about those consequences, including:
*An infected church member carried the virus to the GE Aviation plant in Madisonville, the county seat, where seven employees have tested positive.
*A church member in Dawson Springs died from complications from the virus, and a first responder who assisted the resident has also fallen ill.
*Two cases in Muhlenberg County are linked to the revival, as are an unknown number of cases in Warren and Clark counties, the latter of which is on the opposite side of the state.

The major towns in Hopkins County are Madisonville, the former home of the Happy Goodman Family gospel music group, and Dawson Springs.

The ignorant statements from church and community officials demonstrate the outright denial of what's been known for over two months prior to this event regarding how dangerously contageous this disease is.

One woman even stated that because it's a church, she thought it would be safe.
