As coronavirus spreads around the world, so too do the quack cures

As coronavirus spreads around the world, so too do the quack cures
Politicians, faith leaders and other authority figures have been touting dubious remedies

Just a few teasers....

In India, politicians from the ruling Hindu nationalist BJP party have been touting cow urine as a cure for Covid-19. In Tanzania the president has promised that taking communion in church would “burn” the virus away. In Brazil a congressman claimed a day of fasting would halt its spread.

And the leader of the most powerful country in the world, Donald Trump, has been touting as a miracle cure an unproven anti-malarial drug that has contributed to at least one death.

In Israel cases soared in the ultra-orthodox community as much as four to eight times faster than elsewhere in the country, after its leaders dismissed government regulations. The most senior ultra-orthodox rabbi, Chaim Kanievsky, had initially refused to close packed synagogues and religious seminaries. “The Torah protects and saves,” the 92-year-old said, only in late March relenting and making a call to lone prayer.

In Brazil, Marcos Feliciano, a rightwing pentecostal preacher and congressman, promoted an anti-Covid “day of abstinence” on Sunday 5 April, claiming the fasting would produce a miracle to heal Brazil.

Let's look at this microculture through a different lens.

Suddenly one sunny day, a hooker in the small Saskatchewan town of Pumphandle has an epiphany caused by watching Little House re-runs on TV and decides to take a humanist view of life.

She runs to the guy at the Co-op and tells him because she misrepresented her abilities numerous times, she's forgiving his $100 debt and he can consider her past services a gift of love.

The Co-op man takes this moment to heart, runs to the pig farmer and admits he's overcharged him for years for low-grade feed and forgives his $100 debt.

The pig farmer takes this moment to heart, visits the butcher and admits he's been in cahoots with the weigh scale man for years so he received less pork than he thought and forgives his $100 debt.

This event bring forth an epiphany in the butcher that he's been watching too much Fox-Canada and should make amends with the motel owner, to whom he's sold inferior cuts of meat for decades.

The butcher visits the motel owner, apologizes for his corruption and forgives his $100 debt. This shakes the motel man to his very core.

A tourist visiting the area stops at the motel and to his surprise the motel owner offers him two free rooms for the night if he will cater to the other businesses in town. The visitor whole-heartedly agrees and brings his extended family in from his van.

The visiting family loves the town and stays for a full week, spending their entire vacation budget of $1,000 within the town, including big meals at the motel's restaurant, sausage to take home from the butcher, big bags of chicken feed from the Co-op and the family's lonely uncle sneaks in two late-night visits to the hooker.

The town is now out of debt and $1,000 more wealthy. The vacationing family is happy and will return next year.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is how humility, honesty, and a healthy community works.

Folkstreams: Good entertainment during our isolation.

Preserving the Stories of America

Folkstreams is a non-profit dedicated to finding, preserving, contextualizing, and showcasing documentary films on American traditional cultures.

As an example, I found this one interesting in the "Work" category on how an old-timer in Louisiana builds a pirogue boat out of a cypress log, as it reminded me of my dad's skills with an axe. Dad was a timber man that worked logging during the Great Depression in the mountains of Tennessee.

The Pirogue Maker (1949)

In 1948, Robert Flaherty was working on "The Louisiana Story." He was searching for a small boat, or "pirogue" for his young hero. Flaherty soon became aware that pirogue-making was a disappearing art. Finally, when he found Ebdon Allemon, a Cajun craftsman, he persuaded him to make the pirogue. It may well have been the last piroque made in Louisiana. This is a record of that event.

I'm a simple man. Try looking at coronavirus this way.

We can either chase it or allow it to chase us.

Republicans prefer it chase us until we're all sick or in our graves.

Democrats prefer to chase the virus until it's all denatured and in the sewer.

A wise lady told me years ago to never put my plants outdoors....

until after the Kentucky Derby and my spiders do not like cold.

Damn, was she ever right 'cause it's 30 degrees outside tonight.

I will go by the original date though (May 2) because I can't wait 'til September.....

They need a few more notes to complete that song......

Reminded me of this Maxwell House coffee jingle from my childhood.....

Thanks, Professor. That's good news because....

it means we don't have to super-heat foods we fear could have been contaminated from a store or restaurant. What we're discussing doing here is not much more than what I would normally do to reheat carry-out food.

Still trying to grasp how you arrived at the numbers, but I'll get there.

I suspect the odds of us getting enough viral load to infect from what accidentally got on food items is pretty slim but we feel more safe by going through the exercise of moderate heating.

Thanks again for the help!

Why Are There No Domestic Moose?

Domestication allowed our species to conquer the globe. This is how it works.

Explains quite well why cats are the way they are and so different from dogs.
