KY_EnviroGuy's JournalDaddy, won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County? (*)
Been there and did work in that plant many years ago - those tall buildings next to the stacks. Son-in-law's BIL worked there as an operator 'till it was replaced by gas turbine plants.
Glad to see it gone. Less particulate to mess with people's breathing and less acid rain to screw up the Smokies!
Will take decades to clean it up, if they ever do.......
(*)
Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man
"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the green river where paradise lay?"
"Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away"
When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am
I think everyone in America should come out of our homes....
say, at 5pm or whatever time could be agreed upon and in good weather, stand in our yard and wave and speak to our neighbors.
Would do our souls good.
At least once a week, perhaps?

Australia's NSW at 'critical stage' in relation to coronavirus
Australia's NSW at 'critical stage' in relation to coronavirus: Premier24 Mar 2020 05:45AM

Snips......
"We need to make sure everybody who's in self-isolation stays in self-isolation. We are ramping up our compliance," she told reporters. "There are harsh penalties and we'll enforce that. We have to take this seriously."
The number of COVID-19 cases in NSW jumped by 149 overnight to 818. The total number of cases across Australia has surpassed 1,700, up from fewer than 100 at the start of March.
Berejiklian did not specify how the self-isolation rules will be enforced. She pointed to countries that did not control the spread of the virus early on. "I don't want to be another example of a jurisdiction that didn't do what it needed to do at the right time," she said.

Can kids catch coronavirus? What we know about Covid-19 and children
Two articles..........
Can kids catch coronavirus? What we know about Covid-19 and children
The health effects of the Covid-19 outbreak have generally been milder on children but many unknowns remain
Read here: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/23/can-kids-catch-coronavirus-what-we-know-about-covid-19-and-children
Excerpts:
Yes. They can be infected with and appear to be able to transmit coronavirus, even if they do not have symptoms. That is why it is important for children to practice social distancing and hand-washing, even if they do not appear ill.
How does coronavirus affect children?
It is generally believed to cause milder symptoms in children, but the specific impacts by age are becoming clearer as the outbreak goes on.
Much of what we know today is based on reports out of China, where the outbreak began. There 2.4% of all identified cases were in children under 19 years old. An even smaller number within this group of children had severe symptoms, 2.5%, or what the World Health Organization (WHO) described as a very small proportion. But more research is being done and a clearer picture is still emerging.

What scientists know so far about the effects of coronavirus on children
Jonathan Ball
Studies show that young people are at less risk of serious illness but as invisible carriers they may be key to spreading the virus
Jonathan Ball is a professor of molecular virology
Read here: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/23/scientists-effects-coronavirus-children-studies-carriers
Excerpts:
Far from being uninfected by this virus, children could in fact be its unseen carriers, important links in community transmission chains. But theres still an important piece of the jigsaw missing. While many of us suspect that children have a key role to play in this outbreak, hard evidence to support this belief is still lacking.
+++
In perhaps the largest study of its type, Chinese researchers examined infection outcomes in more than 2,000 confirmed or suspected childhood cases of Covid-19. Just over half of the children had mild cold-like symptoms, or no symptoms at all.
Severe and critical diseases, where body oxygen levels are low and various organs are under threat, were seen in around 5% of the children studied, with the youngest (under one year old) most at risk. There are still significant gaps in this analysis. Importantly, most of these were suspected rather than confirmed Covid-19 cases. But this study does at least reaffirm that most infections in children are mild.
And, he follows with......
As with most things in this pandemic, the idea that coronavirus only threatens older people is an oversimplification. Younger people and children are less likely to die from coronavirus, but their mild symptoms could make them contagious carriers of the virus and they are more difficult to spot.
Good read for me in understanding how my granddaughter could be affected.

Two people connected to Fort Benning test positive for coronavirus
Two people connected to Fort Benning test positive for coronavirusBy Jeremy Redmon, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Military posts across Georgia scrambling to fight spread of COVID-19
Read it here: https://www.ajc.com/news/breaking-news/two-people-connected-fort-benning-test-positive-for-coronavirus/ZQwTgmZPxkemhRjaSYLmzK/
Excerpts:
News of the positive test results comes as military bases across Georgia are scrambling to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus among U.S. servicemembers, civilians and their families. Located near Columbus, Fort Benning is not identifying either of the two patients, citing federal health privacy rules.

As of midday Sunday, there were 600 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Georgia, including two in Muscogee County, where Fort Benning is located, according to the Georgia Department of Health. Twenty-three people in Georgia have died from the illness.
On Wednesday, Robins Air Force Base confirmed nine people there who recently returned from traveling abroad were directed to stay at home or other appropriate domicile coordinated with their leadership for 14 days, practice social distancing and conduct self-monitoring.
The day before, a spokesman at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield near Georgias coast said about 25 U.S. servicemembers and Department of the Army civilians were under a precautionary 14-day observation and monitoring period, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
The majority of those personnel came to Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield from overseas locations and are at both on- and off-post locations, said Lt. Col. Patrick Husted, a spokesman for the 3rd Infantry Division, which is based at Fort Stewart.
Four soldiers from Fort Gordon, in the Augusta area, completed a two-week quarantine this month after returning home from South Korea, said Buz Yarnell, a spokesman for the military installation.
Stay safe, soldiers!..........
Home remediation companies would have the most....
meaning those that do remediation from fire, water and mold damage.
Painting and drywall companies use them to but maybe not N95 grade.
Feel free to pass it on because I don't use social media.
I would guess many of these companies have many dozens of these masks if not hundreds in stores warehouses. They keep a lot around for regular maintenance and scheduled outages.
Same with Tyvek protective suits. They buy them by multiple case lots and in two or three sizes.
Chemical plants would have lots of rubber gloves.
These are a few of the types of plant that would have this stuff in quantities:
* Power plants.
* Paper mills.
* Cement plants.
* Steel and aluminum mills.
* Grain and food production plants where grains and flour are handled.
* Glass plants.
* Chemical plants of all sorts.
* Refineries.
* Mines and ore refining plants and rock crusher plants.
Other:
* Industrial construction companies.
* Industrial service companies.
* Industrial vacuum truck and hazardous waste companies.
If you call such companies, ask for their plant manager, assistant manager or the chief safety officer.
I know these things because I worked in those industries for many years and used those items.
IMPORTANT: Here's a potential source for filter masks.
There's probably a lot of N95s stored away in industry that can be freed up.Any plant or construction company may have masks warehoused for industrial use but someone would need to request them.
They are used by the thousands in plants like power plants, paper mills, cement plants and others where dust is involved during routine or maintenance work. They are kept in plant store rooms, maintenance shops and safety offices. I used quite a lot of these during my service work jobs, along with half-face and full-face respirators.
Another potential source would be construction firms that do work in the plants mentioned above and they keep many of them either in a company warehouse or in their construction trailers.
Many of these plants will be slowed or shut down and I really think plant managers would be willing to donate.
I have no idea how a logical connection could be made between medical people and these sources, but government seems the rational path.
All it would take is a call to a plant manager with an explanation of the dire circumstances and I bet they would donate most of what they have in stores to EMTs, clinics and hospitals.

(added 3/22/20)
This page from WW Grainger gives us an idea of what they were selling for prior to the big rush:
Link: https://www.grainger.com/search/safety/respiratory-protection/disposable-respirators-and-dust-masks?attrs=Respirator+Filter+Class%7CN95&filters=attrs&optOut=0
Looks like $2 or less in lots of 20 was quite common.

Yes but vaguely. I was in grade school.
The things that stuck in mind my are: The adults were absolutely scared to death because some kids had died in our area and I vaguely remember getting the vaccine. Not sure but I'm thinking it was given to us on sugar cubes and maybe more than once.
No one in my family or close friends had the disease but I do recall seeing some kids with the leg braces.
Raised in a small country farm town with grade school and high school on one campus. Don't have good recall from those times even though I had a great childhood.
