In July 2011, NASA's Space Shuttle Atlantis launched from Florida to the International Space Station, the last time humans traveled to space from US soil. The long drought should soon be over as SpaceX prepares to send two NASA astronauts to the ISS inside a purpose-built Crew Dragon capsule. This historic mission passed a critical readiness review and launch is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27.

The mission, known as Demo-2, has had its share of setbacks. With safety checks on the capsule complete, however, NASA and SpaceX are finally ready to fly. We've rounded up everything you need to know about the launch and when and where you can tune in.

Trump officials deflect blame for US death toll, escalate reopening push

Source: cnn

(CNN)Two of President Donald Trump's top officials are now pointing the finger at the administration's own scientists and Americans' pre-existing health conditions to explain the country's world-leading Covid-19 death toll.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar suggested Sunday that underlying health conditions, including among minorities, were one reason for the high American death toll -- nearly 90,000 as of Sunday evening. And Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro added the government's own Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to its list of scapegoats alongside China and the Obama administration.

The White House has been escalating its effort to recast the narrative of its own chaotic response to the crisis as it aggressively pushes to reopen the country, a process vital to the fortunes of millions of people who have lost their jobs in lockdowns and its own political prospects in November.
The effort follows Trump's repeated early denials that the virus would be a problem for the United States and claims that his administration had it under control months ago.

The United States accounts for about 4.25% of the world's population, but currently has about 29% of the confirmed deaths from the disease, and models used by the White House suggest the tragic toll could rise to around 147,000 by early August.

Native Kansan tells stumpy to fuck off...

TOPEKA — A Hutchinson native who began sounding alarms in mid-January over the need for more N95 masks, testing supplies and other equipment that would be needed in the imminent pandemic is scheduled to testify before Congress this week, days after filing a damning whistleblower report.

Rick Bright says he was reassigned as director of Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority for resisting pressure to promote dangerous drugs touted by President Donald Trump as possible cures for COVID-19, pushing for a more aggressive response to the pandemic, and questioning the meritless awarding of contracts to the president’s political cronies.

On Friday, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel moved to temporarily block Bright’s departure from BARDA based on evidence provided in his 89-page complaint.

Bright was removed from his position on April 20 after confirming for a journalist the dangers of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine and providing supporting documentation that included email exchanges among Health and Human Services officials.

“Bright hoped that by shining a light on HHS’s reckless and dangerous push to make these drug available, American lives would be saved,” his attorneys wrote in the complaint.

The internationally recognized expert in immunology, therapeutic intervention, vaccine development and pandemic preparedness had served as director of BARDA since November 2016. Before arriving at HHS in 2010, he worked in the biotech industry and was recruited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2003 to develop testing to combat avian flu.

In late March, Congress passed a massive spending package for COVID-19 response that allocated $3.5 billion directly to BARDA. Bright’s complaint asserts the appropriation intensified hostilities between Bright and his HHS boss, Robert Kadlec, by making it more difficult for Kadlec to siphon funds for companies that have connections to the Trump administration.

As the president and HHS leaders promoted hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug, as a potential cure for COVID-19 in an apparent attempt to score a short-term political victory, Bright resisted pressure to accept or invest in the drug.

Queen’s Brian May Hospitalized After Ripping Glutes ‘to Shreds’ While Gardening

The lead guitarist announced he’s been hospitalized after ripping the muscles in his glutes “to shreds” after working too furiously in his garden.

May posted a photo and video on his Instagram on Wednesday with the unusual announcement.

“As well as getting over-stretched and harassed by too many demands, I managed to rip my gluteus maximus to shreds in a moment of over-enthusiastic gardening,” he wrote.
